First-half breakthrough in Heraklion
OFI Crete opened their Stoiximan Super League campaign on Sunday evening, 23 August 2026, with a 2-0 victory against Volos at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion. In front of an estimated crowd of 10,000 to 12,000 spectators, the home side established control within the opening minutes. The opening goal arrived in the sixth minute when winger Thiago Nuss moved down the left flank and delivered an outside-of-the-boot cross into the penalty area. Volos goalkeeper Marios Siampanis attempted to intercept the ball, but an awkward deflection sent the ball backwards into his own net. The visitors suffered an additional setback in the 14th minute when defender Mygas left the pitch with an injury, prompting manager Kostas Bratsos to bring on Pierre-Gabriel.
Penalty award and offensive control
The Cretan side maintained approximately 60% possession across the opening 45 minutes, preventing Volos from building attacking momentum from the back. In the 30th minute, defender Konstantinos Kostoulas advanced down the right wing before being brought down inside the penalty area by Hamza Mendyl. Match referee Youmatzidis consulted the pitchside monitor after a prompt from VAR official Koumbarakis and awarded the spot kick. Thiago Nuss stepped up in the 33rd minute and converted the penalty into the net to extend the lead to 2-0. OFI created two additional opportunities in first-half stoppage time, as Praxitelis Sielis sent a header inches wide at the near post and Siampanis produced a diving save to deny Giannis Apostolakis.

Squad management and second-half tempo
OFI manager Christos Kontis deployed a 3-4-2-1 formation featuring nine Greek starters, rotating his squad between competitive fixtures. Christos Christogeorgos took the starting goalkeeper role behind a back three of Dimitrios Nikolaou, Praxitelis Sielis, and Kostoulas, with Diekmann and Athanasiou operating as wing-backs. Andreas Bouchalakis and Ilias Kanellopoulos formed the central midfield pair behind an attacking unit led by Giannis Theodosoulakis. Kontis managed player fitness ahead of continental travel by substituting Kostoulas for Achilleas Pouggouras at halftime. Volos generated only two notable chances in the second half, with Essouabi sliding an effort wide in the 58th minute and Giannis Kargas missing with a header in the 63rd minute. Kontis introduced Aitor Cantalapiedra, Thanasis Androutsos, Taxiarchis Fountas, and Zisis Karachalios to secure the clean sheet.
Context ahead of European playoff
The domestic victory continues a positive start to the 2026 season for OFI, who previously secured the Superbet Super Cup against AEK Athens. Three days prior to the league opener, the Cretan club had defeated CSKA Sofia 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League playoff tie. OFI will travel to Bulgaria for the return leg on Thursday, 27 August at 21:00, where they will defend their three-goal advantage. Qualification in Sofia will send OFI into the UEFA Europa League phase, while defeat on aggregate would place them in the UEFA Conference League phase.
