NOS Alive 2026 closes with 160,000 attendees, sets 2027 dates and features Buraka Som Sistema reunion
The 18th edition of the NOS Alive festival in Algés, Portugal, wrapped up on 11 July 2026 with a sold-out final day, revealing a total attendance of 160,000 and confirming the 2027 dates as 8, 9 and 10 July.
Attendance and economic impact
The 18th edition of the NOS Alive festival, held at the Passeio Marítimo de Algés in Oeiras, drew a total of 160,000 spectators over three days. Organisers confirmed that Friday reached the venue's maximum capacity of 56,000 people and that Saturday, the final day, was also sold out. Thursday's opening day saw 48,000 attendees. The festival attracted music fans from 100 nationalities, reinforcing its international standing. Álvaro Covões, director-general of promoter Everything Is New, made the announcement during a Saturday press conference inside the venue, stating that the edition had two sold-out days.
Final day lineup and headline acts
The closing day featured a packed programme across multiple stages. On the main stage, the night opened with blues and soul sets from Don West and Teddy Swims, drawing large crowds. Pixies overlapped with Lorde's set, splitting the audience. The evening culminated with performances by Florence + The Machine and the long-awaited reunion of Buraka Som Sistema, who took the main stage at 00:55 on Sunday. The Portuguese band, which globalised the kuduro rhythm, had been on an indefinite hiatus since 2016 and was also celebrating its 20-year career anniversary. Earlier in the festival, Foo Fighters headlined on Friday, with their concert streamed worldwide and setting audience records, according to Covões. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Twenty One Pilots opened the festival on Thursday.
Lorde's emotive set
Lorde delivered one of the most anticipated performances of the final day, transforming the venue into a large-scale dance arena with a minimalist, elegant show. The New Zealand artist opened with "Royals" and alternated classics from her career with tracks from her new album "Virgin," released weeks earlier. The setlist included "What Was That," "Broken Glass," "Shapeshifter," "Favourite Daughter," "Hammer" and "Man of the Year," alongside older songs like "Buzzcut Season," "The Louvre," "Liability," "Supercut," "Team," "Green Light" and "Ribs." A highlight was the performance of "Girl, so confusing," originally recorded with Charli xcx. Lorde addressed the crowd in Portuguese, recalling her first visit to Lisbon at age 17.
Lisbon has something special. It has a vibe.
She added that the rest of Europe must be very envious and made a light-hearted reference to the recent World Cup, drawing laughter from the audience. Her connection with the fans was immediate, with hundreds singing along to every verse throughout the roughly one-hour set.
Cultural expansion and the new Literary Stage
A notable innovation in 2026 was the Palco Literário, or Literary Stage, which hosted conversations with Portuguese authors. Álvaro Covões described it as "a great victory for Portuguese culture." Participants included Valter Hugo Mãe, Pedro Chagas Freitas, Afonso Cruz, Luísa Sobral and Hugo van Der Ding. Covões noted with pride that none of the invited authors declined the invitation. The festival also featured a comedy stage, bringing the total number of stages to eight, alongside the Coreto Stage dedicated to contemporary Portuguese music.
Reading is perhaps one of the foundations of Culture.
Covões argued that Portugal must encourage its citizens to increase their literary consumption and cultivate cultural habits.
2027 dates and infrastructure plans
The 19th edition of the festival was confirmed for 8, 9 and 10 July 2027, again at the Passeio Marítimo de Algés. The announcement was made on the final day of this year's event. No artists for 2027 were revealed, though Covões noted that, unlike 2026 with the reunions of Da Weasel and Buraka Som Sistema, there are currently no major Portuguese bands on hiatus poised to return. News on the lineup is expected in the coming months. Francisco Rocha Gonçalves, vice-president of Oeiras City Council, stated that the overhead pedestrian crossing announced in 2025, which was closed this year, will be "more than ready" for 2027, enabling better crowd dispersal.
