Haaland's scuffed winner fires Norway past Ivory Coast and into first World Cup knockout victory; Brazil next
Erling Haaland scored an 86th-minute winner to give Norway a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the World Cup round of 32, their first-ever knockout win at the tournament. They will face Brazil in the last 16 at MetLife Stadium on July 5.
Match summary
Norway beat Ivory Coast 2-1 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in their round-of-32 clash on June 30. Antonio Nusa opened the scoring in the 39th minute, curling a left-footed strike into the far corner. Ivory Coast substitute Amad Diallo levelled with a superb solo effort in the 74th. As extra time beckoned, Erling Haaland poked home Patrick Berg's low cross in the 86th minute to send Norway through.
The best thing about the match was the way we came back after their equaliser... we got the match the way we wanted, so that's the biggest achievement.
- Antonio Nusa opens the scoring for Norway with a curled strike from the left
- Amad Diallo equalizes for Ivory Coast with a brilliant solo run
- Erling Haaland scores the winner from close range after a low cross by Patrick Berg
Haaland's decisive contribution
Haaland was largely anonymous but, as he often does, delivered the decisive moment. The Manchester City striker now has 60 international goals in 53 appearances and is the first player to score in his first three World Cup matches. His five goals at this tournament trail only Lionel Messi. A scuffed finish barely crossed the line, yet it sealed Norway's first knockout victory in World Cup history.
I was dead tired, so I thought 'I can't cope with extra time, so we have to score.'
Former England captain Wayne Rooney, a BBC pundit, said: "Norway are a very good team, and purely because of that man. He is just devastating." Ex-England international Steph Houghton added: "The big man was always going to score the winner."
Tactical dynamics
Both sides deployed a 4-3-3 but used their wingers differently. Norway's attack was lopsided, with Alexander Sorloth acting as a wide target man on the right, Nusa a traditional dribbler on the left, and Haaland the focal point. Ivory Coast relied on pace out wide through Amad Diallo, Nicolas Pepe and Yan Diomande. Midfield creativity came from Martin Odegaard, but his early eagerness to find Haaland often broke down promising moves. In the end, Berg's simple ball across the six-yard box proved more effective than elaborate patterns.
He is really under-rated in terms of keeping the ball up. He didn't lose one ball today.
Fan atmosphere and the travel ban effect
Norwegian fans, dressed in deep red and Viking helmets, performed the 'Viking row' chant throughout the match. They cheered the Ivorian anthem and applauded Diallo's equaliser. Ivory Coast's support was sparse, largely because the Trump administration added the country to its travel ban list in December, upending many fans' plans. One Norwegian-American fan, Aaron Rickels, noted: "We've been inspired by Haaland and the Norway soccer team. We just wanted to support them because they came so far to get here."
Brazil up next
Norway, the first European team to reach the last 16 after Germany and the Netherlands exited in the group stage, will face Brazil at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 5. The match offers Haaland and company an even larger stage to extend a campaign that has already set a national milestone.
It's the first time that Norway have won a knockout game and the way we did this against a strong team is something, it's a historic performance.
