PNL appoints former journalist Sanda Nicola to lead Sector 2 branch in Bucharest
Romania's National Liberal Party appointed Sanda Nicola, the former spokesperson for Mircea Geoana, as interim president of its Sector 2 branch in Bucharest as part of a wider capital restructuring.
Leadership transition in Sector 2
The National Political Bureau of the National Liberal Party (PNL) voted to appoint former television journalist Sanda Nicola as interim president of its Sector 2 branch in Bucharest. Nicola replaces Monica Anisie, who was removed by party president Ilie Bolojan after previously receiving a nomination for the Ministry of Education in the cabinet of Adrian Vestea. Nicola, aged 48, previously served as the official spokesperson for Mircea Geoana during his independent 2024 presidential campaign, and ran as a parliamentary candidate for the Romania in Action Party in Bucharest that same year. Following the party vote on 20 August, Nicola addressed public reactions in a video statement, framing the appointment as a temporary operational test ahead of upcoming internal elections.
It is like hiring on a probationary period. That means I received a representative position and a deadline. I have a few months until the next internal elections to prove that I am capable of organizing a branch considered underperforming by the PNL.
Motivations and entry into party politics
Nicola explained in her statement that joining the party followed years of professional preparation rather than a sudden career shift. She stepped down from television journalism seven years ago to pursue academic research in social geography and regional development, seeking to acquire policy expertise prior to entering public administration. Nicola stated that her initial discussions regarding party involvement took place with Bucharest General Mayor Ciprian Ciucu immediately after his municipal election victory. Subsequent conversations with PNL president Ilie Bolojan finalized her entry and interim appointment.
Whoever followed me closely over time is not shocked, they know that I wanted this and prepared thoroughly to enter politics. That is why I resigned from television seven years ago and dedicated myself to research, going deep into social geography and regional development, understanding that if the chance of public office ever arose, looking good on screen is not enough, I would also need to know how to create public policy.
Restructuring across Bucharest sector branches
The leadership change in Sector 2 forms part of a wider administrative overhaul across four of Bucharest's sector organizations. The National Political Bureau unanimously approved interim appointments for four district branches: Nicola in Sector 2, Dragos Pislaru in Sector 3, Oana Gheorghiu in Sector 4, and Andrei Badiu in Sector 5. Mayor Ciprian Ciucu stated that the new leadership team brings established professional careers to the task of rebuilding local branches and formulating municipal policies. Bolojan confirmed the appointments across the capital, describing the move as a direct effort to open the party organization to urban voters.

Legal disputes and tenure conditions
Nicola noted that her interim leadership faces potential procedural hurdles due to ongoing legal disputes within the party. A court ruling previously suspended the statutory decisions of the PNL Extraordinary Congress, which could affect decisions issued by national party leadership. Nicola identified two legal outcomes that could shorten her tenure, including a final court ruling upholding the congress suspension or a judicial decision annulling the dismissal of the previous branch leadership. If the appointments remain legally intact, Nicola plans to contest the leadership post formally through branch member votes at the conclusion of the reorganization period.
