Neymar Faces World Cup Opener Doubt After Grade-Two Calf Tear Sidelines Brazil Star for Two to Three Weeks
A grade-two calf muscle injury has thrown Brazil star Neymar's participation in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup into serious doubt, team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed on Thursday.
Injury Diagnosis at Granja Comary
Brazil forward Neymar arrived at the national team's Granja Comary training base near Rio de Janeiro on 27 May, already carrying a calf complaint from his club Santos' match against Coritiba on 17 May. After missing the first training session, he underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which revealed a grade-two muscle tear in his right calf, not just the swelling initially reported by Santos' doctor Rodrigo Zogaib.
Neymar underwent all the medical tests, which concluded with an MRI scan revealing a grade two calf injury, not just swelling. He is expected to be cleared in two to three weeks.
The 34-year-old, Brazil's all-time top scorer with 79 goals in 128 caps, last played for his country in October 2023 when he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus against Uruguay. This setback marks another chapter in a career increasingly disrupted by injuries.
Friendlies and World Cup Opener at Risk
Neymar will definitely miss Brazil's final warm-up matches: a home friendly against Panama at the Maracanã Stadium on Sunday 31 May, and an away friendly against Egypt on 6 June (one German source reports the Egypt game as 7 June). With a recovery window of two to three weeks, his availability for the World Cup Group C opener against Morocco on 13 June is highly uncertain. Some German-language outlets date that match to 14 June. If the recovery takes the full three weeks, Neymar would only be cleared around 18 June, jeopardizing also the second group match against Haiti on 19 June in Philadelphia.

Long-Awaited National Team Return
Carlo Ancelotti named Neymar in his final World Cup squad after omitting him from March friendlies due to fitness doubts. The Italian coach emphasized the forward's importance to the team, and midfielder Casemiro publicly backed his teammate.
Neymar has experience, knows the pressure of a World Cup perfectly, and can still give a lot to this team.
Neymar aims to appear at his fourth World Cup (2014, 2018, 2022, 2026), but his last international match remains that fateful qualifier in 2023. In the meantime he returned to boyhood club Santos from Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal in early 2025.
Wider Squad Dynamics
Ancelotti already faces absences for the Panama friendly: Arsenal defender Gabriel and forward Gabriel Martinelli, along with PSG's Brazilian captain Marquinhos, are all unavailable because they will contest the Champions League final on 30 May. The coach selected Neymar ahead of Chelsea's Joao Pedro and Tottenham's Richarlison, betting on his big-game experience—a gamble now under pressure.
