Germany's 2-1 defeat to Ecuador exposes defensive frailties and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's declining aura, setting up likely Paraguay clash
Germany's 2-1 loss to Ecuador in the final World Cup group match has ignited criticism of manager Julian Nagelsmann's selections and Manuel Neuer's performance, while setting up a likely round-of-16 meeting with Paraguay.
Match unravels after early lead
Germany took the lead in the second minute through Leroy Sané, but Ecuador equalised and then scored a late winner through Gonzalo Plata in the 78th minute. The 1-2 defeat was Germany's first loss after eleven consecutive wins and left them with four goals conceded across three group matches, including against Curaçao and Ivory Coast. Striker Deniz Undav said of Ecuador:
They wanted it more than us.
Defensive reshuffle without Schlotterbeck
Nico Schlotterbeck was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament with an ankle injury. Antonio Rüdiger replaced him, and Nathaniel Brown’s absence pushed David Raum into the back four, leaving half the defensive line newly assembled. In the chaotic closing stages, Rüdiger had to intervene when a mix-up between Jonathan Tah and Neuer nearly led to a third goal. Captain Joshua Kimmich said the team cannot concede one or two goals every match.
Neuer's aura and the goalkeeper debate
Manuel Neuer, recalled from international retirement for his "aura," has conceded the first shot on target in each of the three group games. Against Ecuador, he was slow to react for the equaliser and then, in the 78th minute, attempted to catch a near-post header at the five-metre line. Plata’s foot reached the ball first, and the ball went in. Former Germany captain Lothar Matthäus told Bild that Neuer acted "too hesitantly, almost fearfully" and added:
That is not the Manuel Neuer we know.
Neuer rejected the blame, calling it a routine header extension and saying any goalkeeper would have tried to catch the ball. He argued that punching at chest height in the six-yard box could have caused an own goal. Nagelsmann described the situation as "extremely thankless" and said the cross should have been defended differently.
Nagelsmann’s substitutions and Thomas Müller’s verdict
With the knockout match four days away, Nagelsmann replaced Jamal Musiala and Felix Nmecha with defensive-minded substitutes. Former international Thomas Müller, working as a television analyst, said the team lacked "savviness" and called their approach "naive", comparing them unfavourably to an Argentina side that would simply not allow a chance. Müller’s criticism cut deeper than the coach’s post-match remarks, which stressed the need for "patience" to open gaps.
Paraguay awaits in the round of 16
An AI model by the Berliner Zeitung gives Paraguay a 91.43 percent probability of being Germany’s next opponent, with Scotland at 8.57 percent and Sweden at 15.67 percent in a parallel FIFA-style calculation. The first ever World Cup round of 32 match for Germany will take place on Monday in Foxborough, near Boston. World champion Mats Hummels warned that Paraguay would mimic Ecuador’s intensity and tight midfield play, saying:
They will try to force the turnovers that the German team likes to give away.
