Extradited neo-Nazi Marla Svenja Liebich will serve 1.5-year sentence in men's prison, Saxon authorities decide
After extradition from the Czech Republic, convicted neo-Nazi Marla Svenja Liebich was taken to Chemnitz women's prison but will now serve her 1.5-year sentence in a men's facility, the Saxon justice ministry said.
Extradition and arrival
On 15 July 2026, Czech police announced on the platform X that neo-Nazi Marla Svenja Liebich had been handed over to German authorities. She was taken from the border to the Chemnitz women's prison, arriving at 11:40. Senior prosecutor Dennis Cernota told dpa that Liebich cooperated fully and no incidents occurred.
She cooperated fully; there were no special incidents.
Liebich had been arrested in the Czech Republic in April 2026 under a European Arrest Warrant. She fled Germany in August 2025, just before she was due to begin a 1.5-year prison sentence. A court in Pilsen approved her extradition in early June, and the Prague Higher Regional Court later rejected her appeals. During the proceedings, Liebich said she did not want to be sent to Germany because she feared for her life in a German men's prison.
Prison placement decision
On 16 July, the management of the Chemnitz women's prison decided that Liebich will serve her sentence in a men's facility. The Saxon justice ministry confirmed the decision to dpa. Liebich had been initially placed in the women's prison because her legal gender was changed to female in 2025 under Germany's Self-Determination Act. However, German prison laws allow authorities to consider security and protection factors in placement decisions, not just the gender entry. The women's prison management made the determination after Liebich's arrival, applying the state's prison regulations which permit case-by-case assessments.
Conviction and flight
In July 2023, the Halle district court sentenced Liebich, then known as Sven Liebich, to one year and six months in prison without probation. The charges included incitement of hatred, defamation, and insult. The sentence was originally to begin at the end of August 2025, but Liebich fled. She was eventually located and arrested in the Czech Republic in April 2026. The Halle trial consolidated six separate indictments, some dating back several years.
Gender change and legal challenges
After the conviction, Liebich used the Self-Determination Act to change her legal gender from male to female and her first name from Sven to Marla Svenja. Critics, including the Saalekreis district, called the move an abuse of the law. In December 2025, the district initiated legal steps to have the gender entry corrected. A court in Halle is still reviewing whether the change can be reversed. The Self-Determination Act allows changes via a simple declaration at the registry office, but separate rules apply for prisons, sports, and protected spaces.
Far-right activism
Liebich, 55, born in Merseburg, has been a nationally known figure in Germany's far-right scene. Since 2014, she has organized regular demonstrations, often on the market square in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt. These events frequently led to clashes with counter-protesters and multiple court cases. The 2023 conviction was the culmination of years of legal proceedings against her.
