Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel will be awarded the French Legion of Honour at the French Embassy in Berlin this Friday afternoon, recognising his work on Franco-German cooperation.
Ceremony in Berlin
Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel will receive the insignia of a Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour during a ceremony at the French Embassy in Berlin on Friday afternoon. The event will include a joint speech by Nagel and François Villeroy de Galhau, honorary president of the Banque de France, on the topic of "Europe and Franco-German relations".
Recognition of cooperation
The award recognises Nagel’s commitment to Franco-German cooperation, the Bundesbank said in a statement. It described the honour as a symbol of the partnership between Germany and France, and of the importance of shared values and cooperation in Europe.
A historic order
The Legion of Honour was established by Napoleon Bonaparte on 19 May 1802. It is awarded to individuals who have rendered exceptional service to France or its republican ideals, regardless of nationality. Among the first Germans to receive the honour was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
