Mycologists report that weeks of high temperatures and minimal rainfall have halted fungal growth in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, pushing the primary harvest into late autumn.

Persistent summer dry spells across northern Germany have delayed the main autumn mushroom season, leaving foragers in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with empty baskets. Regional mycological specialists report that recent hot and dry weather has restricted the emergence of common edible varieties, including porcini, bay boletes, and field mushrooms. In Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, foragers have also faced dry woodland floors where early species like chanterelles are typically gathered.
Mushroom instructors Jonas Frank and Sine Ulukaya, who operate the educational platform Pilzgeflüster Schleswig-Holstein and lead excursions around Kiel and Rendsburg, confirmed that the summer harvest remained sparse.
The current drought actually has an impact on the growth of mushrooms.
Moisture thresholds and fungal biology
Fungi depend heavily on soil moisture to produce visible fruiting bodies above ground. Hamburg mushroom coach Linus Koch noted that intensifying heat phases exert severe stress on forest flora, fauna, and fungal mycelium. According to regional experts, foragers should observe a general rule of thumb: familiar edible mushrooms typically take between two and four weeks to appear following substantial rainfall after extended dry spells.
Biological requirements differ notably across species. Rostock district mushroom coach Robert Sprunk explained that mycorrhizal fungi like the porcini depend on complex symbiotic relationships with host trees and require sustained moisture. By contrast, saprophytic species such as the shaggy ink cap can often sprout rapidly after a single heavy rain shower.

The sluggish start in August 2026 stands in contrast to the regional yields recorded during the 2025 foraging calendar. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 2025 delivered strong results for targeted foraging, beginning with a wide surge of summer porcini across the state in July. While a short dry period caused a brief dip in October 2025, robust species diversity resumed and persisted through November.
In Hamburg, Linus Koch evaluated the 2025 harvest as mixed for edible mushrooms, marked by alternating bouts of drought and intense precipitation. Frank and Ulukaya noted that Schleswig-Holstein collected slightly lower quantities in 2025 than in earlier years. If dry weather continues into September 2026, experts warn that the primary autumn flush will be pushed further into the year.
Foraging distribution and habitat diversification
To avoid overharvesting in popular woodlands during condensed autumn seasons, experts recommend broadening foraging habits across different seasons, habitats, and species. Robert Sprunk noted that seasonal foraging can extend year-round, starting as early as March or April for morel hunters.

Sprunk advised foragers to explore overlooked sites such as older public parks and municipal green spaces, which frequently sustain diverse fungal communities while relieving foot traffic in popular state forests. Frank and Ulukaya recommend consulting the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mykologie database to identify whether local forest soils are calcareous or acidic, allowing collectors to match their excursions to specific target species.
