Catholic bishop of Quelimane shot dead at his residence in central Mozambique

Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of Quelimane was killed by gunfire in the early hours of Saturday at his official residence. Police say unidentified attackers scaled the wall and shot him in the chest with an AKM rifle.

The attack

The bishop of Quelimane, Osório Citora Afonso, was killed in the early hours of Saturday 6 June at the Paço Episcopal, his official residence in the city of Quelimane, Zambézia province. The Serviço Nacional de Investigação Criminal (SERNIC) said the 54-year-old prelate was shot in the chest with an AKM assault rifle. SERNIC spokesperson Maximino Amílcar told journalists the attackers scaled the perimeter wall and vandalised the electric security fence before firing on the bishop.

We are dealing here with an aggravated homicide.

Amílcar added that the electric fence may have been out of service for two months, which could have made access easier and suggested the assailants had prior knowledge of the vulnerability. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

The victim

Osório Citora Afonso was a member of the Consolata Missionaries. He was appointed bishop of Quelimane in July 2025 and, in April 2026, was also named apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira by Pope Leo XIV. The Diocese of Quelimane confirmed his death in a statement, saying he was found lifeless in a corridor of the episcopal residence.

His violent death has left us all very surprised and apprehensive.

Bishop Diamantino Antunes of Tete described the killing as a "barbaric murder" and expressed hope the authorities would quickly clarify the motives.

Official reactions

President Daniel Chapo issued a statement expressing "profound sorrow and consternation" at the bishop's death. He called it an "irreparable loss" for Mozambican society and for the Catholic Church, highlighting Afonso's work in promoting peace, reconciliation and dialogue. The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique also confirmed the death, though its president, Inácio Saúre, initially cautioned against calling it a murder before the investigation concluded.

You cannot say he was assassinated; he was found dead and that is all I can say.

Police spokesperson Belarmina Muija said officers were on the ground conducting forensic work and could not yet confirm the cause of death at that stage. SERNIC later classified the case as an aggravated homicide.

Context

Catholics made up about 27 percent of Mozambique's population at the last census in 2017. The country, a former Portuguese colony in southern Africa, has seen episodes of violence in its central provinces in recent years, though no link has been established between those events and the bishop's killing. The investigation remains in its preliminary phase and authorities have not disclosed any suspected motive.
