José Mourinho questions referee decisions following Real Madrid defeat against Real Betis

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho addressed officiating decisions from his team's 1-0 loss to Real Betis at La Cartuja during a press conference ahead of their Champions League fixture against Inter. A goal by Parrott decided the Friday league match. Mourinho stated that Real Madrid lost because the squad failed to convert offensive chances into goals, but he demanded explanations regarding why a penalty was not retaken by the video assistant referee (VAR).

We lost to Betis. We lost because we did not translate the team's offensive production into goals. Period. But, the penalty... for what reason was it not retaken? Was it not retaken because the VAR does not know the regulations? Or was it not retaken because the VAR did not want to? This is a question that I, as Real Madrid coach, would like the people responsible to answer for me.

Mourinho pointed to match referee Hernández Hernández and the VAR officials, arguing that if the VAR official did not order the penalty retake due to a lack of knowledge of the rules, that official should not work matches. He also asked why the VAR did not call the referee to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.

In addition to the penalty incident, Mourinho questioned a yellow card shown to captain Vinicius during the match. Mourinho stated that Vinicius pointed to his captain's armband and moved to speak with the referee before receiving the booking.
