One minor dead, two critical after drowning incident at Tarragona’s Arrabassada beach
Six teenagers ran into trouble in heavy surf near rocks at Arrabassada beach on Friday; three were pulled from the water by rescuers, but one died and two remain in critical condition.
The incident
A group of six minors, aged 13–14, entered the water at Arrabassada beach in Tarragona on Friday afternoon during high waves and a yellow flag advisory. They were reportedly jumping from rocks into the sea. When they tried to return to shore, the strong surf and possible rip currents trapped them in the water. Three managed to reach the sand on their own, but the other three could not.
Rescue effort
Emergency services received the call shortly after 3:30 p.m. The Catalan Medical Emergency System (SEM) deployed six ambulances and a medical helicopter, while five fire crews, Mossos d’Esquadra police (including maritime unit), the Red Cross, and Maritime Rescue all responded. Rescuers pulled the three remaining minors from the water and the SEM transported two of them in critical condition to Joan XXIII hospital in Tarragona. The third died at the scene.
Beach conditions
Witnesses reported large waves and that the yellow flag was flying at the time of the incident. After the drownings, the beach posted a red flag, prohibiting all swimming due to dangerous sea conditions. The victims had been playing on a rocky area of the beach, which witnesses say complicated their escape from the water.
Official reaction
Catalan president Salvador Illa expressed his shock at the accident.
Devastated by the accident at Arrabassada beach in Tarragona, where a minor has lost his life. My affection and all support to the family and friends in these difficult times.
He also wished a fast recovery for the two minors hospitalized in critical condition.
