Malaika Mihambo ends 2026 season early after thigh injury at Katowice Diamond League
Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo will miss the remainder of 2026 after suffering a left thigh injury during a Diamond League street event in Poland.
Injury in Katowice
German long jumper Malaika Mihambo has been forced to end her 2026 competitive season early after suffering a left thigh injury in Poland. The 32-year-old Heidelberg native sustained the injury during her fifth attempt at the Diamond League street meeting held on the market square in Katowice on Saturday, 22 August 2026. Mihambo received immediate initial medical treatment on site before being transported to a local hospital for further clinical examination. The German Athletics Association (DLV) announced on Sunday that the Olympic champion will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan on Monday to determine the full severity of the muscular injury. DLV officials confirmed that she will definitively take no further part in competitions for the remainder of the year.
Competition results and podium
The long jump in Katowice took place in the city center alongside the men's high jump and women's shot put, prior to the main Diamond League programme scheduled for Sunday in nearby Chorzow. Mihambo faced recurring difficulties with her run-up, managing only one successful attempt of 6.60 metres alongside one recorded effort of 4.92 metres and three fouls. The distance placed her seventh overall in the final standings. Alyssa Jones of the United States won the competition with a mark of 6.98 metres on her final jump, edging out Portugal's Agate de Sousa. De Sousa had also reached 6.98 metres but lost the top spot due to a weaker second-best attempt. Monae' Nichols of the United States secured third place with 6.95 metres, while European silver medallist Jazmin Sawyers of Britain took fourth with 6.84 metres.

Cancelled late-season schedule
The medical decision rules Mihambo out of three international meetings that were originally scheduled to close out her 2026 campaign. The 2021 Tokyo Olympic champion will miss the ISTAF meeting in Berlin on 30 August, the Diamond League final in Brussels on 4 and 5 September, and the newly established Ultimate Championships in Budapest from 11 to 13 September. The sudden conclusion to the season represents a heavy setback for the German track and field delegation heading into the autumn.
That is very bitter.
- Records season mark of 7.05 metres
- Finishes fifth at the European Championships in Birmingham with 6.94 metres
- Suffers left thigh injury on fifth attempt in Katowice
- Scheduled start at ISTAF in Berlin cancelled
- Scheduled Diamond League final appearance in Brussels cancelled
- Scheduled appearance at Ultimate Championships in Budapest cancelled
European Championship setback and future targets
The injury in Poland followed another setback six days earlier at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Mihambo, who entered that tournament as the defending European champion, finished fifth in the final with a best jump of 6.94 metres. She finished four centimetres short of the bronze medal position and six centimetres behind the gold medal jump of Italy's Larissa Iapichino, who did not compete in Katowice. That result contrasted with her performance in the Birmingham qualification round, where she recorded 7.10 metres despite taking off approximately 20 centimetres before the board. Earlier in July, Mihambo had achieved a jump of 7.05 metres, a mark that would have won the continental title in Birmingham. Looking beyond her rehabilitation, the two-time world champion plans to compete at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, where she aims to capture a third world title, before targeting the 2028 Olympic Games as the probable conclusion to her career.
