Meta Launches Paid 'Plus' Subscriptions for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp Globally
Meta has officially begun the global rollout of paid subscription plans for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, marking a major shift in its business model to diversify revenue beyond advertising.
Meta has launched a new wave of paid subscription plans for its core social media and messaging platforms, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Naomi Gleit, Meta's head of product, in a video posted on Instagram. The new 'Plus' plans are priced at $3.99 per month for Instagram and Facebook, and $2.99 per month for WhatsApp, and are designed to offer users enhanced features for content creation, privacy, and personalization.
What the Plus plans offer
For Instagram and Facebook Plus, the focus is on enhancing social expression and content visibility. Subscribers gain access to advanced story features, including the ability to see the total number of rewatches a story receives, create unlimited custom audience lists, and extend the duration of stories beyond the standard 24 hours. A notable privacy feature allows users to view others' stories without appearing in the viewer list. The plans also include options to boost visibility, such as highlighting one story per week to reach a wider audience, and publishing content directly to a profile without it appearing in followers' feeds. Aesthetic customization includes exclusive animated reactions, custom app icons, and new fonts for bios.
Subscriptions offer richer ways to express and connect in our apps, with more fun features to be added.
WhatsApp Plus, in contrast, is centered on personalization. The subscription provides premium stickers, custom ringtones, and varied chat themes. It also allows users to pin up to 20 additional chats.
The push for recurring revenue
This strategic move comes as Meta faces intense investor scrutiny over its massive spending on artificial intelligence. The company plans to invest between $125 and $145 billion in 2026, primarily directed toward AI data centers. The launch of these subscriptions is seen as a direct effort to build a new, recurring revenue stream to offset these costs and reduce the company's historical dependence on advertising. Following the announcement, Meta's stock rose by more than 3% on Wall Street.

Future plans and Meta One
Gleit indicated that the current Plus plans are just the first step. Meta's long-term strategy involves integrating these services into a unified subscription called 'Meta One'. The company is also beginning to test additional paid plans for businesses, content creators, and users of its Meta AI chatbot. These include business-focused tiers like Meta One Essential for $14.99 per month and Meta One Advanced for $49.99 per month, which offer verification badges, impersonation protection, and enhanced visibility in feeds and search results. AI-focused plans, Meta One Plus and Meta One Premium, are priced at $7.99 and $19.99 per month respectively.
Context and rollout
This is not Meta's first foray into paid subscriptions. In 2023, the company launched paid, ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram for European users to comply with EU data protection regulations. The new Plus plans, however, do not replace the existing Meta Verified service, which focuses on account verification and support. The global rollout of the Plus plans has begun, with the AI-related plans set to begin testing next month in countries including Singapore and Guatemala.
