McDonald's pledges $8.5 billion in franchisee aid and sets 2030 growth targets
McDonald's unveiled an 8.5 billion dollar investment package running through 2036 to support franchisees with rent relief and restaurant upgrades, while rolling out artificial intelligence systems and protein-focused menus to revive sales.
Capital commitments and franchisee relief
At its first investor day in three years, McDonald's detailed an 8.5 billion dollar capital initiative running through 2036 to aid franchise operators. The company plans to allocate roughly 5 billion dollars of that total by 2030 through rent relief and capital investments. Franchisees operate more than 60 percent of global locations as of 2025, and remodeling expenses for individual US restaurant lobbies can reach 450,000 dollars. The broader Next plan increases estimated per-location investment costs to around 800,000 dollars, phased in across multiple years. Company executives designed the relief program to offset these capital demands and improve store economics.
When franchisees have stronger economics, our system is stronger.
Menu adaptations and chicken expansion
The Chicago-based chain is focusing menu development on poultry and high-protein foods as beef prices rose over 20 percent across the United States and the United Kingdom over the past two years. McDonald's established a target to capture an additional 1.5 percentage points of global chicken market share by 2030, alongside an identical 1.5 percentage point expansion in beverage market share. The company holds a chicken market share in the high teens compared to roughly 45 percent in beef, though poultry consumption is expanding twice as fast. McDonald's USA president Skye Anderson noted that 30 million Americans currently use GLP-1 weight-loss medications and demand smaller, protein-dense portions, while internal research identified 60 million consumers seeking higher protein intake. Planned menu items include grilled chicken sandwiches, wraps, egg bites, and protein bowls across all dayparts.

Digital ordering and automation
Technology upgrades form a central pillar of the restructuring program, targeting 250 basis points of restaurant-level efficiency gains. McDonald's plans to expand its ArchIQ operating system, developed alongside Google, to automate store tasks such as inventory management and drive-thru order processing. Proprietary order-accuracy devices currently operating in 10,000 restaurants will expand to 20,000 locations globally by 2028. The company is also testing third-party advertising on drive-thru digital boards at company-owned locations, presenting commercial content to drivers after orders are placed. Efficiency gains from these automated tools are projected to generate approximately 100,000 dollars in additional annual cash flow for the average US location.
Financial outlook and market conditions
The initiative follows slowing domestic demand, with US comparable sales rising 0.2 percent in 2024 and 2.1 percent in 2025. Chief Financial Officer Ian Borden informed investors that US comparable sales in the current quarter are tracking slightly negative. Chief Executive Chris Kempczinski stated that customer traffic across wholly owned markets is expected to remain flat as consumer budgets face sustained inflation.
We expect industry traffic growth in our wholly owned markets will be flat, while inflation remains elevated.
The company is targeting an operating margin in the low to mid-50 percent range by 2030, with new store expansion projected to contribute 2.5 percent to systemwide sales growth in 2027 and 2.0 percent by 2030. McDonald's shares dropped 6.4 percent following the presentation, bringing year-to-date declines to nearly 18 percent.
