Giorgos Mazonakis breaks silence on psychiatric hospital admission and family conflict
Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has given his first interview about his involuntary hospitalization at the Dromokaiteio psychiatric hospital in August 2025, describing the arrival of police, his fears, and the family rift behind it.
The first account
Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has spoken publicly for the first time about his involuntary committal to the Dromokaiteio psychiatric hospital last summer, in an interview to air in full on Alpha Cyprus on Sunday, 12 July 2026. A preview clip released on 8 July shows him recounting the moment two plainclothes police officers appeared at his door to escort him to the facility, the reaction of other patients, and the family conflict that precipitated the episode.
I learned to speak when I want, not when others want.
The singer told presenter Tassos Tryfonos on the programme “Tet a tet” that he initially doubted he would be held.
I thought they wouldn't keep me, because involuntary hospitalization means you are a danger to the community and yourself. The first thing I thought was how I would face the people inside the clinic. I saw it a bit like I was going on a visit. It was quite difficult, I can say. I was the joy of Dromokaiteio. Someone who saw me there said, ‘we're fine, since Mazonakis is here, we're perfect’.
Family accusations
Mazonakis blamed close relatives for the episode, reportedly after a family member submitted the request for involuntary hospitalization, which was then approved by a prosecutor. Without naming individuals, he drew a stark portrait of domestic tension.
Love between relatives is often destructive. Because through love, the greatest crimes are committed. Whatever I said, they told me what they wanted. I started to lose the ground under my feet. How is it possible for my family, who were united, to tell me such things?
Public support
Strikingly, Mazonakis said he drew strength not from those close to him but from his fans. He expressed surprise at the backing he received from the public during his stay and afterward.
The full interview will be broadcast on Sunday, 12 July 2026, at 21:00 on ALPHA Cyprus. The public protected me. One thing I also didn't believe would happen. There were times I said, ‘I can't take it anymore’.
