Magdeburg ends 25-year Supercup drought
SC Magdeburg secured the German Handball Supercup on Saturday, defeating DHB Cup winners Füchse Berlin 38:31 in front of 10,199 spectators at the SAP Garden in Munich. The victory ended a 25-year title drought in the competition for the reigning German league champions, who had previously lifted the trophy in 1996 and 2001. Head coach Bennet Wiegert, who was a player during the club's 2001 victory, claimed his first Supercup title as coach on his fourth attempt. The result also prevented Füchse Berlin from completing a three-tournament winning streak in the event.
Early control and Kristjansson's flawless finishing
Berlin took their only lead of the match in the opening minute through a goal from Matthes Langhoff. Magdeburg responded quickly, with goalkeeper Matej Mandic recording three saves in the first five minutes and Albin Lagergren establishing a 3:1 advantage. Magdeburg maintained high efficiency around the six-meter crease, converting 17 of their first 19 shooting attempts. World Handball Player of the Year Mathias Gidsel scored Berlin's fourth goal in the tenth minute, but playmaker Gisli Kristjansson extended Magdeburg's lead to 17:10 by the 25th minute. Berlin transition and coaching reactions
Kristjansson finished the evening with nine goals from nine attempts, while Gidsel led Berlin with ten goals. Füchse Berlin entered the match following squad changes during the summer break, including the departures of key players Lasse Andersson and goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev. Berlin managing director Bob Hanning had rejected suggestions prior to throw-off that the 2026–2027 campaign would serve as an interim phase, stating that the club continues to pursue high targets despite defensive concerns. Speaking after the final whistle, Wiegert expressed satisfaction with his team's focus and tactical execution.
I am really happy. We have stood here often and could not get this thing for 25 years. I noticed from the first minute that we were ready. Passion and attitude were absolutely right for us today.
Blomberg-Lippe takes women's title on penalties
Earlier in the day, reigning women's Bundesliga champions HSG Blomberg-Lippe won their first Supercup title by defeating cup winners Borussia Dortmund 26:24. The contest finished level at 9:9 at halftime and 22:22 at the end of regulation time, requiring a penalty shootout to determine the winner. Goalkeepers Nicole Roth of Blomberg-Lippe and Sarah Wachter of Dortmund dominated the low-scoring early stages, which stood at 3:1 in the twelfth minute. In the shootout, Roth stopped one Dortmund penalty and another Dortmund attempt struck the post, securing the win in Kay Rothenpieler's competitive debut as Dortmund head coach.
We posed some challenges for Dortmund, but we also made avoidable mistakes. In the end, I am glad to have won, to have taken the title with us. But I am even more satisfied with the performance that the team delivered.
