Łódź police say attack on two girls was invented by the girls themselves
Łódź police said the two girls, aged 13 and 15, admitted they had invented the attack on Pomorska Street reported that morning. The false report came as police in several cities dealt with knife incidents involving teenagers at schools.
Report of an attack
Police in Łódź received a report at 9:30 on Friday, 9 October, that two girls aged 13 and 15 had been attacked by an unknown man after leaving a shop on Pomorska Street. According to the reports, the man approached them and then struck them with an unidentified sharp object, leaving superficial wounds on their cheeks. Sources differed on the weapon: Onet Wiadomości said the girls were probably injured with a knife, while Dziennik Łódzki said it was not known which tool had been used. Police said the injuries were not dangerous and that the attacker had not been caught.

Police denial
After 12 o'clock, the Łódź police publicly denied the report. Police said the information about the alleged attack on the two girls was untrue and that intensive police work had established that the girls themselves admitted they had invented the story.
Intensive actions by police officers led to establishing that the girls themselves admitted that they had invented the story presented.
The police statement added that every report reaching the force is carefully checked and that the circumstances of each event are subject to verification. Before the denial, police spokeswoman Kamila Sowińska had told TVN24 that officers were investigating the circumstances of the incident and trying to detain the attacker.
Knife incidents at schools
In a separate case described by the same police force, a school pedagogue informed officers that two 13-year-old pupils had brought sharp objects to school. The backpacks contained knives 10 centimetres long. The pedagogue learned of the threat from other children rather than from the pupils themselves.
This shows how important it is to react in this type of situation.
Across Poland, police said, teenagers are being detained with sharp objects after threatening classmates or after appearing in videos posted online. Most of them try to justify their actions as a joke. Police said they are conducting intensive activities in connection with knife attacks at schools, and patrols are present outside school buildings.
