Liverpool sign winger Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for £123 million

Liverpool confirmed the signing of France international forward Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday. The Premier League club agreed to an initial fee of £106 million (€125 million), with performance-related add-ons that could lift the final package by £17 million (€20 million) to £123 million ($166 million). The transfer terms also require Liverpool to pay a £4.3 million (€5 million) solidarity fee directly to Barcola's formative club Olympique Lyonnais. The transaction sets a financial record for a player leaving the French league and stands as the most expensive transfer of the summer window, ahead of Yan Diomande's €140 million move to Real Madrid, Morgan Rogers' €137 million transfer to Chelsea, and Elliot Anderson's €135 million switch to Manchester City. Barcola agreed to a five-year contract running through mid-2031 and will wear shirt number 29.

Negotiation timeline and agreement

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon conducted the negotiations with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Talks accelerated after Gordon assumed direct oversight of negotiations following the departure of FSG CEO of football Michael Edwards. The clubs reached a decisive breakthrough during a meeting on 25 August, before finalizing the payment schedule and solidarity terms on 28 August. Barcola completed his medical assessments on Monday morning after maintaining that he would not entertain offers from other interested clubs.

Three seasons with Paris Saint-Germain

Barcola arrived at PSG on 31 August 2023 when the club paid Lyon €45 million ($52 million) for his registration. Over three seasons in Paris, the forward made 152 appearances, scored 39 goals, and contributed 37 assists across all competitions, helping the club secure 13 trophies including two consecutive UEFA Champions League titles and three Ligue 1 championships. His starting opportunities diminished in the most recent campaign under manager Luis Enrique, who favoured Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in attacking roles. Barcola, who turns 24 on 2 September, also represented France at the summer World Cup, where the team finished in fourth place following a semifinal defeat to Spain.

Tactical fit under Andoni Iraola

The French forward arrives as the fourth signing under Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola this summer, joining central defender Jacquet, winger Víctor Muñoz, and defender Ronald Araújo, who joined on loan from Barcelona. Liverpool's total expenditure has reached almost £670 million including performance add-ons since the start of last summer, following the previous arrivals of striker Alexander Isak for £125 million and midfielder Florian Wirtz for £116 million. Barcola operates primarily on the left flank, where Cody Gakpo and Muñoz played during Liverpool's opening two league draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. His arrival also addresses the departure of Mohamed Salah, who left Anfield in June after nine seasons to join Trabzonspor.
