Tour de France: Florian Lipowitz breaks collarbone in Stage 16 crash, abandons race as Evenepoel wins

Red Bull's Tour de France ambitions were dealt a severe blow on Stage 16 when German rider Florian Lipowitz crashed in the individual time trial and broke his right collarbone, forcing him to abandon the race. The team hotel outside Findrol was subdued despite Remco Evenepoel winning the stage ahead of yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar. Team boss Ralph Denk described the mood as sombre, calling the loss of Lipowitz a painful hit for their podium strategy and team morale.

Crash overshadows stage win

Evenepoel took his second consecutive stage victory on the time trial, yet the mood at the Campanile Findrol Savoie Leman team hotel was little short of funereal. The 25-year-old Lipowitz was still in hospital when the team gathered, his Tour over and his right collarbone broken. Denk made clear that the victory felt hollow.

We will miss him not only in the fight for the podium, but also as a person. We won today, but it's not like everything is super-great for us. I'm sorry for Remco too, that it's not all peace, joy and pancakes here.

Evenepoel himself expressed deep sympathy for his teammate and acknowledged the practical cost. Having two riders in the lead group had been an essential tactical card on the mountain stages, and Lipowitz had been in active contention for third place overall.

After all the sacrifices he has made, this is especially painful. First and foremost it is very bitter for him, but also for the team.

Season collapse and recovery timeline

Doctors diagnosed a broken right collarbone, an injury that demands a minimum six-week recovery window. That prognosis eliminates Lipowitz from the Vuelta a España, which runs from 22 August to 13 September. It also makes his participation in the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, scheduled for 20 to 27 September, extremely unlikely. The earliest potential return would be at one-day Italian autumn classics such as the Tour of Lombardy on 10 October.

For a rider who finished third in the previous year’s Tour, the crash caps a difficult three weeks. Lipowitz had endured persistent scrutiny over Red Bull's dual-leadership setup, a minor spat with Evenepoel in the opening week, and a disappointing mountain stage to Plateau de Solaison where he could not match the pace of Pogacar or his own Belgian teammate.

Red Bull pivots fully to Evenepoel

With Lipowitz out, Red Bull's road map for the remainder of the Tour is unambiguous: everything behind Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian sits second overall, 4 minutes and 32 seconds behind Pogacar. Denk insisted the team would fight to hold its podium place but was blunt when asked whether Evenepoel could challenge for the yellow jersey.

We won't give the podium away. There will certainly be a hard fight ahead, with high mountains to come. But we also have a strong Remco. When it comes down to man against man, I don't see a chance.

Evenepoel's own assessment was equally pragmatic: losing Lipowitz removes a key ally for the remaining Alpine stages and deprives the squad of a rider who, on every recent mountain day, had been among the final seven contenders. The team's margin for error is now gone.
