Lech Poznań came from behind to defeat Górnik Zabrze 3-1 in the Polish Super Cup on 16 July, securing a record seventh title, while Górnik lost midfielder Jarosław Kubicki to a suspected broken wrist ahead of their Champions League qualifier against Fenerbahce.
Match recap
Lech Poznań began the 2026/27 season by defeating Górnik Zabrze 3-1 in the Polish Super Cup at Stadion Miejski in Poznań on 16 July. Górnik struck first in the 14th minute when Maksym Chłań finished a counter-attack after a misplaced Lech corner, slotting past debutant goalkeeper Mateusz Lis. Lech equalised in the 27th minute: Patrik Walemark drove down the right and crossed for Antoni Kozubal, whose shot deflected off goalkeeper Philipp Schulze and into the net. The hosts took the lead two minutes after the restart, Kozubal setting up Mikael Ishak for a low finish. Pablo Rodriguez added the third in the 69th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Yannick Agnero's effort was parried. The victory gave Lech a record seventh Super Cup title, breaking the tie with Legia Warsaw.

Kubicki injury compounds Górnik's midfield crisis
Górnik's defeat was worsened by a serious injury to midfielder Jarosław Kubicki. In the 35th minute, Kubicki fell heavily on his left wrist after an aerial challenge with Pablo Rodriguez and was visibly in pain. He returned with a bandage from hand to elbow but was substituted moments later. Coach Michal Gasparik said after the match that the team was awaiting X-ray results to determine whether the wrist was broken.
We don't have players in midfield, and if Kubicki is out, we'll have even bigger problems.
Górnik had already lost Patrik Hellebrand (to Korona) and Lukas Ambros (to Anderlecht) during the summer window, leaving the squad thin in central areas. Gasparik admitted that Lukas Sadilek, deployed as a holding midfielder, "doesn't feel comfortable there" and that the club urgently needs reinforcements.
Lech's Champions League preparations
Lech coach Niels Frederiksen said the team had created "a small tradition" of winning a trophy each season and that starting the campaign with silverware was a boost. He acknowledged defensive lapses, particularly on counter-attacks, and said adjustments would be needed for Tuesday's Champions League second qualifying round first leg away to Danish champions Aarhus GF. Frederiksen confirmed that Lech would not request a postponement of their Ekstraklasa opener against Cracovia on 25 July, despite the European fixture. Goalkeeper Mateusz Lis, making his debut, "had a couple of good interventions" and remains in contention to start against Aarhus, though Frederiksen said no decision had been made.
Expert reactions
Polish football analysts praised Lech's depth and quality. Jakub Kłyszejko of TVP Sport noted that the squad is "in a diametrically better situation than a year ago before the Champions League qualifiers." Mateusz Janiak of Przegląd Sportowy highlighted Radosław Murawski's defensive work (7 defensive actions, 6 duels won) and his role in freeing Kozubal to contribute a goal and an assist. Szymon Ratajczak of Eurosport commented that Kozubal is "calmly working towards a transfer" with his value rising. For Górnik, Przemysław Michalak of Weszło called the timing of Kubicki's injury "the worst possible moment" given the midfield shortages. Maciej Jędrzejak of Canal+ listed the departures and injury, summing up: "These are not easy weeks for Michal Gasparik."
What's next
Górnik face Fenerbahce in the Champions League second qualifying round on Tuesday, with Gasparik warning that his team conceded "very easy goals that were defendable" against Lech and must tighten up. Lech travel to Aarhus the same day, aiming to reach the third qualifying round and secure at least a group-stage berth in a European competition. The Super Cup also marked the competitive debut of several new signings for both sides, including Lech's Terry Yegbe and Górnik's Philipp Schulze, Kacper Urbański, Taofeek Ismaheel, and Erik Prekop.
