Latvia identifies downed drone as Ukrainian after Russian jamming diverts flight path
Latvian military authorities confirmed that an uncrewed aerial vehicle shot down by an Italian NATO fighter on 14 August was a Ukrainian drone diverted from Belarus by Russian electronic warfare.
Interception over Balvi municipality
An Italian fighter jet stationed in the Baltic region intercepted and shot down an uncrewed aerial vehicle in Latvian airspace on Friday, 14 August 2026. The Italian Air Force executed the engagement as part of NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission over the eastern flank of the alliance. Military tracking confirmed that the drone crossed into Latvian sovereign airspace directly from the territory of Belarus. The aircraft was destroyed in the vicinity of Rugaji in Balvi municipality, located approximately 60 kilometres north of the city of Rezekne in northeastern Latvia. Following the shootdown, search teams from the National Guard of the Republic of Latvia located the debris in the area on Friday evening. Sapper units secured the crash site and carried out a controlled detonation of the drone's remaining explosive payload on Saturday, 15 August.
Official identification as Ukrainian
On Thursday, 20 August 2026, the Latvian armed forces released an official statement confirming that the destroyed vehicle was of Ukrainian origin. The incident occurred while Ukrainian armed forces conducted long-range aerial strikes against Russian port facilities across the region. Latvian military officials stated that the specific aircraft model would not be publicly released to protect ongoing and future operations conducted by the Ukrainian armed forces. The Baltic state confirmed that the drone did not intentionally target Latvian territory but deviated off course during combat operations.
Latvian military authorities described the primary cause of the flight path deviation:
The drone entered the Baltic country from Belarus, most likely as a result of Russian electronic warfare interference.
Disruption from Russian electronic warfare
According to the Latvian military command, Russian armed forces deploy extensive electromagnetic warfare systems across the regional conflict zone. These electronic warfare countermeasures actively jam navigation channels, suppress radio communications, and disrupt autonomous satellite guidance systems. Latvian defence officials explained that such electromagnetic interference significantly degrades, and can completely prevent, the operation of precision guidance systems used by long-range strike weapons. When electronic warfare systems severed the drone's navigational links, the uncrewed craft strayed off its designated flight corridor towards Russia, passed across Belarusian airspace, and crossed the eastern border into Latvia.
Pattern of Baltic border incursions
The destruction of the drone on 14 August was the second time allied fighter aircraft shot down an uncrewed aerial vehicle inside Latvian airspace. NATO fighter jets previously shot down an uncrewed aircraft over Latvia for the first time on 8 June 2026. Ukrainian military strike drones aimed at targets inside Russia have entered Baltic airspace on several occasions throughout 2026. In most earlier cases, off-course uncrewed aerial vehicles crashed in uninhabited regions without inflicting casualties or structural damage. In one previous occurrence, however, a stray drone struck civilian infrastructure in Latvia, resulting in physical damage to empty fuel storage tanks.
