American Airlines Flight 2398 departed Atlanta, Georgia, carrying 133 passengers on a scheduled flight to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Friday, 21 August 2026. Approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled arrival in Texas, a passenger laptop computer located in the middle section of the cabin began to emit smoke and caught fire.

Flight attendants contained the flaming laptop within approximately five minutes by sealing the device inside a specialized onboard thermal containment bag. During the containment effort, cockpit crew communicated with air traffic control, reporting a cabin fire and estimating that four to five passengers had suffered burn injuries while attempting to deal with the burning hardware.

Paramedics treated one injured passenger directly at the scene, and airport authorities confirmed that the individual was evaluated and discharged without requiring hospitalization.
