HBO's 'Lanterns' premiere ends with Hal Jordan's frozen corpse and a 10-year time jump twist
HBO's Green Lantern series 'Lanterns' debuted its first episode on August 17, 2026, pairing Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan with Aaron Pierre's John Stewart in a Nebraska murder mystery before a flash-forward revealed Hal's frozen corpse with a bullet hole in his forehead.
A new take on Green Lantern
HBO's "Lanterns" premiered its first episode on August 17, 2026, offering a departure from conventional superhero storytelling. The series was co-created by Damon Lindelof (co-creator of "Lost"), Tom King (a comic book writer known for his work on DC and Marvel characters), and Chris Mundy (a writer and producer on "Ozark" and "True Detective: Night Detective"), who combined a pulpy crime story with superhero revisionism. The show is part of the new DC universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The creators make clear from the start that the series will not be a typical action-adventure, instead leaning into the narrative structure and genre play that Lindelof demonstrated in "The Leftovers" and "Watchmen."
The episode introduces Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, as a grizzled veteran Green Lantern who received his ring from a dying alien named Abin Sur. Jordan is assigned a trainee, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), by the Guardians of the Universe. In a Midwestern bar, Hal explains how he landed his role.
I got it the old fashioned way. I sure as hell didn't interview for it.
The case in Rushville, Nebraska
The central plot revolves around mysterious murders in the small town of Rushville, Nebraska, where four dead aliens are discovered on a high school football field circa 2016. Hal and John investigate the case, with Hal proving to local Sheriff Kane (Kelly Macdonald) that aliens are present in the town. During questioning at the jail, Hal taunts an alien disguised as a local resident so aggressively that the creature detonates itself, blowing a hole in the jail wall.
The town is populated with shady characters, including William Macon (Garrett Dillahunt), a wealthy rancher who takes a liking to Hal but is secretly under an NDA and cannot disclose what is on his property. Macon's wife Zoe (Poorna Jagannathan) had an affair with John Stewart. The show's setup suggests Macon may harbor a significant secret on his ranch, with the possibility he becomes a future antagonist.
The time jump twist
The premiere's closing minutes deliver a flash-forward 10 years ahead to 2026, where a goateed John Stewart is called to examine the frozen corpse of his former mentor. Hal's ring is gone, there is a bullet hole in his forehead, and snow has accumulated on his whitening hair. Sheriff Kane identifies the body, and there appears to be no obvious reason to suspect anything beyond what the scene plainly suggests.
The episode leaves open the possibility that the "Hal-o-gram," a digital back-up consciousness of Hal that appeared earlier after Stewart survived a car crash, could mean the real Hal is still alive. The car crash occurred when Hal jumped out of a vehicle as it careened off a cliff with Stewart inside, forcing the new recruit to use the ring to cushion the impact. The Hal-o-gram's first words in the episode were "Shit, am I dead?" echoing the question the premiere leaves viewers asking.
- Four dead aliens discovered on a Rushville, Nebraska high school football field
- Hal taunts an alien in custody; the creature detonates itself, blowing a hole in the jail wall
- Hal jumps from a car as it careens off a cliff with Stewart inside; Stewart uses the ring to cushion the impact
- Stewart finds Hal's frozen corpse with a bullet hole in his forehead and his ring missing
What lies ahead
The first episode has not yet taken viewers to space, nor introduced characters like Sinestro or Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner. The show's creators, speaking on Deadline's Crew Call podcast, unpacked the ending and discussed how the trio teamed up to revive Green Lantern for the new DC era. The timeline set up by the premiere leaves open whether Hal Jordan is truly dead or whether his back-up consciousness holds the key to his survival, with the rest of the season positioned to explore the decade-long gap between the 2016 investigation and the 2026 discovery.
