ECB's Lagarde says she may quit early to join French presidential debate
ECB President Christine Lagarde has opened the door to an early resignation, saying she may leave before her term ends in October 2027 to bring a 'European voice' to the French presidential election campaign.
Interview with Les Echos
In an interview published on the website of French financial daily Les Echos on July 2, ECB President Christine Lagarde said she could not rule out leaving her post before the end of her mandate in October 2027. "It's possible. I believe that a European voice needs to be heard in the French presidential debate," she stated. The remarks represent a reversal from February, when she firmly denied a Financial Times report that she planned to step down early to allow outgoing President Emmanuel Macron to influence the choice of her successor.
Conditions for an early exit
Lagarde emphasised that during the current "turbulent period" triggered by the Middle East war, "the captain of the ECB ship must stay on board" to ensure price stability. The conflict has reignited inflation, forcing the ECB to raise interest rates on June 11 after a pause that began in July 2025. Asked whether she might leave if the situation calms, she replied: "It's possible." She added that if the presidential debate presents a diminished view of France's role in Europe, "I think we would have to explain why that would be a painful path for our country and our citizens."
French political ambitions
Lagarde, a former French finance minister, said France will need to take "courageous decisions on difficult issues" and that candidates have a duty to examine them and propose solutions. She noted that "contrary to what I often hear from politicians, the French are perfectly aware of the situation and expect a discourse of truth and solutions." When asked directly whether she might support a candidate or run herself, she initially joked, "I'll ask myself questions," before correcting: "No, I'm joking. I think it's not on the agenda."
Timeline of speculation
Rumours of an early departure first emerged in February, when the Financial Times reported Lagarde's intention to quit early. She denied the story at the time. The speculation resurfaced last week during the Sintra central bank forum. Lagarde is scheduled to attend the Rencontres économiques in Provence on July 3, alongside European Council President Antonio Costa, where the topic may attract further attention. The French presidential election is set for April 2027, with Macron unable to seek a third term.
