22-year-old climber dies after rock breaks off during descent in Karwendel mountains
A 22-year-old climber from Munich died on Saturday in the Karwendel mountains after a rock he was holding broke off, causing him to fall 130 meters down steep terrain near Mittenwald, police said.
Accident in the Karwendel
Two 22-year-old climbers set out on an advanced route in the Karwendel mountains near Mittenwald on Saturday. The pair were well-equipped and successfully reached the summit of the Schöttelturm, a peak close to the Viererspitze.
The fatal rock break
After the first climber abseiled down, the second, a man from Munich, decided to continue the descent through easier terrain without rope protection, according to the police report. During this section, a rock that he was holding broke off. He fell approximately 130 meters down steep, rocky ground, sustaining fatal injuries.
Emergency response
Mountain rescue teams and an emergency doctor were flown in by helicopter. Upon arrival, they could only confirm the man's death. A police helicopter later recovered the body from the rock face. The incident was reported by police in Rosenheim on Sunday.
