70-year-old man found unconscious after apartment fire in Kallithea, Athens
A fire in a ground-floor apartment in Kallithea early Monday left a 70-year-old man unconscious and in serious condition. His brother, who was also inside, refused hospital treatment.
Fire breaks out in Kallithea apartment
A fire erupted in a ground-floor apartment on Dimitrakopoulou Street in Kallithea, a southern suburb of Athens, in the early hours of Monday, 6 July 2026. The fire service was alerted at approximately 3:30 am and dispatched 12 firefighters with four vehicles to the scene. The blaze was brought under control, but not before a 70-year-old man was found unconscious inside.
Victim found without consciousness
During the firefighting operation, firefighters located the elderly man in a bedroom and pulled him out. He was not breathing and was handed over to an ambulance from the National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB). He was transported to Evangelismos Hospital, where he remains in serious condition. Initial reports suggest the fire likely started in the bedroom where he was found.
Brother refuses hospital treatment
The man's brother, who is of similar age, was also in the apartment at the time of the fire. He was in an adjacent room and was found by firefighters. Despite suffering from respiratory problems, he declined to be taken to hospital. The brother's condition is not reported to be life-threatening.
Firefighting response and damage
A total of 12 firefighters and four fire engines responded to the call. The fire was brought under control, though the exact time of containment was not specified. The apartment sustained significant damage but was not completely destroyed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though early reports point to the bedroom as the origin.
Recent fire in the same area
The incident comes just one week after another apartment fire in Kallithea, though no connection between the two events has been suggested. The fire service has not commented on any pattern.
