Body of journalist Roxana Guzmán found in Veracruz; eight arrested, including four municipal police officers
The remains of Roxana Guzmán, a local journalist abducted from her home in Nanchital on 2 June, have been identified, the Veracruz prosecutor's office confirmed on Friday. Eight suspects have been arrested, among them four municipal police officers accused of providing logistical support to the criminal group responsible.
The abduction and the video
Roxana Guzmán, director of the digital outlet Pulso Informativo Nanchiteco, was taken from her home in Nanchital, southern Veracruz, on the evening of 2 June 2026. A 35‑second video circulated widely on social media: two masked men are seen smashing the front door with a sledgehammer, then kicking it in while armed with rifles, before the recording cuts off. The footage drew national attention and a response from President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Confirmation of death and arrests
On 27 June, remains were located at a property in Moloacán, roughly 20 kilometres from Nanchital. Forensic analysis completed this week confirmed they belonged to Guzmán. The state prosecutor announced that eight arrest warrants had been executed on homicide charges. Among those detained are Javier Iván “Delta 1,” José del Carmen “Delta 7,” Luis Arturo “Delta 11,” and Karen Monserrat “La Hiena,” identified as an accomplice. Crucially, four of the suspects were serving as municipal police officers at the time of the crime.
They provided resources, food, and logistical support to the criminal group’s operations.
One of the detained officers, José del Carmen Cadena Escayola, led investigators to the burial site after his capture by navy and police units.
A deadly year for the press in Veracruz
Guzmán is the third journalist killed in the state in 2026. On 8 January, Carlos Castro, who ran the Facebook news page “Código Norte de Veracruz” covering security issues, was shot dead in a Poza Rica restaurant. On 11 June, crime reporter Luis Ángel López Valdez was gunned down in a taxi in the same northern city, on the day Mexico inaugurated the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was under official protection after receiving threats linked to his work.

- Guzmán’s remains identified; eight arrests announced
According to the State Commission for the Attention and Protection of Journalists, Veracruz recorded 31 journalist murders and four disappearances between 2005 and 2024. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranks Mexico 122nd in its global press freedom index, calling it the second most dangerous country for reporters after Palestine.
This crime confirms the authorities’ inability to protect the press and worsens the already alarming toll of three journalists killed in this state since the beginning of 2026.
National reaction and debate over collusion
The involvement of municipal police officers has reignited debate about links between law enforcement and organised crime. Civil society groups Article 19 and RSF demanded “urgent answers” to prevent the case from sinking into impunity. President Sheinbaum, asked about the broader pattern of disappearances, rejected accusations of state complicity.
In Mexico there are no state‑endorsed disappearances.
The federal prosecutor’s office has taken over the investigation from local authorities, a move ordered after the public outcry over Guzmán’s abduction.
