Jodrell Bank Observatory faces closure as UK slashes astronomy funding, risking physics brain drain
The Science and Technology Facilities Council plans to withdraw funding for the iconic radio observatory and its e-Merlin network by March 2028, part of £162m in savings that also hit Rubin, La Palma, and the Event Horizon Telescope.
A pioneering observatory
In December 1945, physicist Bernard Lovell set out for the Cheshire countryside with army surplus radar to study cosmic rays. He instead detected radio reflections from meteor trails, giving birth to radio astronomy at Jodrell Bank. The Lovell telescope, completed in 1957, was then the world's largest radio telescope and the only instrument capable of tracking the Soviet Sputnik satellite. During the Cold War, the site monitored Soviet missiles. In 2019, Jodrell Bank earned Unesco World Heritage status. Today it anchors e-Merlin, a seven-telescope network that forms the UK's national radio astronomy capability.
Scientific legacy
Radio astronomy has transformed our understanding of the universe. Using the technique, astronomers have identified spinning neutron stars that beam radiation like lighthouses, observed matter swirling around supermassive black holes, and detected the faint afterglow of the big bang. Jodrell Bank has also been a training ground for generations of astronomers.
The funding axe
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) plans to pull funding in March 2028, ending all scientific observations unless alternative support is secured. The BBC reports that observations will cease on 1 April 2028. The observatory's annual budget is £2.8 million, a small fraction of UK Research and Innovation's nearly £10 billion budget. The STFC says it must save £162 million by 2030, driven by cost overruns from soaring electricity and staff costs and unfavourable foreign exchange rates for international collaborations.
Wider astronomy cuts
The Jodrell Bank closure is part of a broader retrenchment. UK involvement in the Rubin observatory in Chile, which last month began a decade-long project to record the largest cosmic movie ever, will drop 20%. Funding for an observatory on La Palma in the Canary Islands will also fall 20%, and work on the Bison solar observation network will be cut by 40%. The UK is withdrawing from the Event Horizon Telescope, which captured the first image of a black hole, and will no longer participate in the James Clark Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. Astronomers described the news as devastating, shocking, and disastrous. Scientists called the decision heartbreaking and scientifically misguided.
Brain drain fears
The funding crisis threatens an exodus of researchers, dealing a blow to British science and national growth. The loss of Jodrell Bank, a site that has trained future astronomers for decades, could accelerate a physics brain drain. The STFC's emphasis on research with more potential to create new industries and jobs has left fundamental astronomy vulnerable.
