Reece James a major doubt for England's final group match against Panama as Rice also sits out training
England right-back Reece James is a major doubt for Saturday's Group L finale against Panama after missing training with a hamstring issue, while Declan Rice also sat out Thursday's session with a calf problem.
Injury concerns in defence
Reece James felt a tight hamstring at the end of England's goalless draw with Ghana on Tuesday and did not train with the squad on Thursday at their Kansas City base. Manager Thomas Tuchel is not expected to take any risks over the 26-year-old Chelsea defender, who has started both World Cup matches so far. Tino Livramento had already left the group before the opening game with a calf injury, leaving Ezri Konsa as a potential right-back option after two appearances in central defence.
Declan Rice also missed Thursday's session after leaving Boston Stadium with strapping on his left calf. Sources indicate the 27-year-old Arsenal midfielder's fitness is less of a concern, but he is one booking away from a suspension for the round of 32 after being cautioned against Ghana.
He's Dec, isn't he? He plays football and he wants to play football. He wants to play every game and he'll do whatever he can to help the team.
Group L standings and what's at stake
England lead Ghana on goal difference and hold a one-point advantage over Croatia, whom they beat 4-2 in their opener. A win against already-eliminated Panama at New York New Jersey Stadium would secure top spot and a round-of-32 meeting with a third-placed side in Atlanta on 1 July.
Eze ready for his chance
Eberechi Eze has played only 16 minutes as a substitute so far but says his experience of settling in at Arsenal after a summer move from Crystal Palace has prepared him for a patient role. The 27-year-old believes Tuchel could deploy two number 10s against deep-lying opponents, which would open the door for more game time.
I feel like that's the type of position I've been put in. It's the mentality that I've grown up having as well, staying ready, staying resilient, trusting that the time will come and whenever you're called upon being ready to express yourself.
Ghana stalemate frustrations
Assistant coach Anthony Barry described Ghana's defensive block as "deep, deep, deep, probably deeper than we expected" at half-time of the 0-0 draw. Tuchel later complained about the length of the grass, a remark that drew criticism. England struggled to break down the low block and might have conceded a penalty for Ezri Konsa's challenge on Prince Adu.
