Opposition leaders debate strategy and defense spending

The final day of the TEHA Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio opened on 6 September 2026 with a dedicated panel featuring leaders from Italy's opposition parties. Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra spokesperson Angelo Bonelli, Italia Viva leader Matteo Renzi, and Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein attended in person, while Five Star Movement president Giuseppe Conte participated via video link. The discussions addressed domestic cooperation on labour regulations, environmental measures, and proposed legislation regarding conflicts of interest. Foreign policy and European defense commitments emerged as central points of contention during the morning debate. Conte directly challenged the defense spending pledges agreed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni within the NATO framework.

Europe does not benefit at all from continuing a military escalation that is only leading to a rearmament policy that is draining resources.

Sovereign wealth proposal and social spending

During his address, Conte detailed an economic initiative from the Five Star Movement to establish a national sovereign development fund. He confirmed that bills specifying the structure of the project had been submitted to both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The proposed fund seeks to mobilise unused public assets and private domestic savings to finance infrastructure and human capital while offering returns to participants. Conte argued that public resources should protect the national social model rather than fund defense targets reaching 5% of the national budget. He cited recent funding reductions in the national healthcare system as evidence that public resources must be directed toward domestic priorities.

Coalition alignment and cost of living critiques

Speaking to journalists at Villa d'Este, Matteo Renzi criticised the economic record of the Meloni administration. Renzi argued that despite the government reaching longevity milestones, official figures from the national statistics agency Istat show increasing poverty levels and reduced purchasing power across Italian households. He stated that rising everyday expenses, including household utility bills and basic groceries, require an alternative platform from the centre-left. Renzi also clarified Italia Viva's position within the opposition landscape, distinguishing the broader centre-left from the Campo Largo alliance composed of the Democratic Party, the Five Star Movement, and Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra. Additionally, Renzi referenced Roberto Vannacci's debate the previous day with former premier Mario Monti, comparing his political alignment to Alternative for Germany.

Giorgia Meloni is happy to have surpassed the longevity record, but Istat data gives us a country with more poor people, with less purchasing power and with an increase in everyday spending, from utility bills to the shopping cart.

Cabinet ministers present policy agendas at forum finale

Cabinet members followed the opposition panel to present the executive's policy priorities across economic and administrative sectors. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and Minister for Public Administration Paolo Zangrillo spoke on infrastructure and governance, alongside Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Justice Minister Carlo Nordio. Minister of Labour and Social Policies Marina Calderone joined National Council for Economics and Labour President Renato Brunetta to examine employment policies and youth skills training. Minister of Economy and Finance Giancarlo Giorgetti led the concluding session on national finance.
