Israel Katz rejects US envoy criticism over military strikes in Syria
Defense Minister Israel Katz dismissed remarks by US envoy Tom Barrack over strikes on a Syrian air base, stating Washington was informed beforehand to deter Turkish troop deployments.
Defense ministry rejects American envoy critique
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz on Saturday publicly criticized Tom Barrack, who serves simultaneously as the United States ambassador to Turkey and the special envoy for Syria. The dispute centers on Barrack's condemnation of an Israeli airstrike conducted on Tuesday against a Syrian military air base. Katz stated that Israel had transmitted detailed security intelligence to appropriate American authorities before launching the operation. The Israeli government maintained that the strike was necessary to prevent a planned deployment of Turkish armed forces at the facility. In a public message on X, Katz wrote that Barrack's remarks contained numerous inaccuracies and took stances that contradicted the official foreign policy of US President Donald Trump. Barrack had earlier condemned the military action as an unnecessary escalation.
Dispute over elections and Golan Heights status
The diplomatic rift widened after Barrack gave an interview to Lebanese-American commentator Mario Nawfal, which was broadcast on Friday. In the discussion, Barrack suggested that the strike on Syria might represent an electoral maneuver by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel's parliamentary elections set for 27 October 2026. Barrack added that the prime minister faces a difficult contest to remain in office. Barrack also referred to the Golan Heights as being under Israeli occupation. Israel captured most of the Golan Heights during the 1967 war and later annexed the territory, a decision recognized by the United States in 2019 during Donald Trump's first presidential term.
Rejection of domestic opposition and political motives
Katz addressed Barrack's statements alongside domestic criticism from Israeli opposition leaders who denounced the Syrian bombing. Opposition figures had questioned the military necessity of the operation, viewing the timing through a political lens. Katz rejected these assertions, defending the strike as an operational necessity rather than an electoral calculation.
The attempt by opposition elements and certain media to present the strike in a political light stems from a mixture of ignorance, a lack of understanding of Israel's security interests, and a constant desire to attack the government.
Escalating friction between Israel, Turkey, and Syria
The disagreement follows growing friction between Israel and Turkey over military activity in Syria, building on relations already strained by the war in Gaza. Israeli officials argued that Damascus was close to violating an established security status quo by permitting a Turkish troop deployment at the Syrian air base. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel sent a clear warning message to Ankara and would not accept any southward extension of Turkish forces in Syria. In response, Syria's Foreign Minister told Axios that Damascus had no intention to establish a Turkish base or allow a permanent Turkish military presence, while Ankara labeled Israel's claims unfounded. Katz separately accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of pulling Turkey into dangerous adventures across Syrian territory.

Cross-border military activity continued on Saturday as Israeli forces conducted an additional strike in Syria near the Golan Heights. Government officials in Damascus reported that the strike wounded one person. The Israeli military announced that a drone targeted a specific individual who was in the final preparation phase for terrorist attacks. Israeli authorities did not release further operational details regarding the target's identity or affiliation.
