
Isar Aerospace reaches orbit from Norway in first commercial launch from continental Europe
German startup Isar Aerospace launched its Spectrum rocket from Norway's Arctic Andøya Spaceport on 5 September, deploying five small satellites into orbit.
Orbital launch from Arctic Norway
German aerospace startup Isar Aerospace carried out the first commercial orbital launch from continental Europe on Saturday, 5 September 2026. The Bavarian company launched its two-stage, unmanned Spectrum rocket from the Andøya Spaceport located in Arctic Norway. The rocket carried five small satellites and an in-flight technology experiment into orbit, serving as both a vehicle qualification mission and the company's first commercial payload delivery. Isar Aerospace engineered the Spectrum rocket specifically to deploy small and medium payloads into low Earth orbit. Ground controllers monitored the trajectory as the vehicle ascended from the Arctic facility, and the company confirmed that the rocket reached its planned orbit.
Before the launch, Isar Aerospace co-founder and chief executive Daniel Metzler pointed to the structural constraints facing European satellite operators.

Recovery from the March 2025 test
The mission succeeded 18 months after the startup experienced an explosive failure during its inaugural launch attempt. In March 2025, Isar Aerospace launched its first Spectrum rocket from the same launch pad at Andøya, but the vehicle crashed into the sea and exploded shortly after liftoff. The accident resulted in no injuries. The company treated the 2025 test as a productive engineering milestone because it provided critical flight data that allowed engineers to modify the propulsion, vehicle structure, and flight control software for subsequent flights.

Following the orbital deployment on Saturday, Isar Aerospace published an announcement confirming that the vehicle had successfully reached orbit from Norwegian territory.
European spaceport competition and autonomy
The launch takes place as European governments and private operators work to establish autonomous orbital capabilities and reduce their dependence on United States providers. The global launch market is led by Elon Musk's SpaceX in the United States, while Europe has historically relied on ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and Safran, which launches heavy and medium Ariane rockets from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana.
Continental launch sites are advancing across northern Europe to secure commercial contracts. In addition to Norway's Andøya facility, Sweden is developing the Esrange Space Center, and the United Kingdom is building the SaxaVord Spaceport located in the Shetland Islands. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz visited the Andøya launch site in March 2026, reflecting European efforts to build domestic capacity as international relations shift under United States President Donald Trump. Norwegian Minister of Industry and Trade Cecilie Myrseth stated that domestic Arctic launch sites provide critical regional infrastructure.

Institutional funding and market outlook
To fund its technical development and manufacturing expansion, Isar Aerospace secured approximately 200 million euros from the European Space Agency. The organization granted the funds to finance the development of future rocket variants and the construction of expanded testing and launch infrastructure. European Union member states regard sovereign launch capacity as a priority for defense, communications, and Earth observation satellite networks.
