The mediators fear that Washington and Tehran could become locked in a cycle that keeps the conflict below the threshold of a full-scale war but indefinitely damages regional economies. The US government is currently reviewing the proposal and has urged Israel to avoid any actions that could close the diplomatic window, Axios quoted American officials as saying.

Trump hosts Lebanese president amid regional tensions
President Donald Trump is meeting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at the White House on Tuesday. The visit, the first by a Lebanese head of state to Washington since 2009, is expected to focus on solidifying the existing ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Since April, Israel and Lebanon have held their first direct political talks in decades, though the Lebanese government is not a party to the war and Hezbollah is not involved in the negotiations. Aoun hopes Trump will press Israel to fully withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon; despite the truce, Israel continues to strike targets in the north.
Tehran's demands for a final deal
Iranian leaders have outlined conditions for a definitive agreement to end the war with Washington. Alongside other issues, Tehran demands its own control over the Strait of Hormuz and a permanent end to the military conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The US and Israel have insisted on Hezbollah's disarmament, which the militia rejects.
Violence continues with tenth night of US strikes
The US military command Centcom announced Tuesday morning that the latest wave of strikes had ended, targeting military facilities including air defence systems, command centres and launch sites for drones and rockets. Trump posted on Truth Social before the operation concluded: "Every time Iran kills an American soldier, it will pay for that death many times over." Trump's spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said on X that the president would travel to a military base in Delaware on Tuesday evening to witness the return of the remains of recently killed service members.
Casualties and the human toll
Three US soldiers have been killed in recent days. On Friday, Iranian airstrikes in Jordan killed a 25-year-old from Hawaii and a 19-year-old from Texas; additional unidentified human remains were also found at the site. Another soldier died in Iraq while destroying munitions from an Iranian drone. In total, 17 American military personnel have been killed since the war began at the end of February.
