Jack Clarke scores 90th-minute winner as Ipswich beat Sunderland 2-1 on Premier League return
Substitute Jack Clarke scored in the 90th minute against his former club to secure a 2-1 opening-day victory for newly promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Opening day victory at Portman Road
Ipswich Town marked their return to the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Portman Road on Saturday. The fixture was Gary O'Neil's first competitive match in the dugout as Ipswich manager since replacing long-serving boss Kieran McKenna in June. O'Neil selected six full debutants in his starting lineup following an active summer transfer window. The Suffolk club made 12 new signings and spent more than £150 million to rebuild the squad after suffering relegation two seasons earlier. The result gave the home supporters only their second Premier League home victory in 24 years, matching the opening ambitions of Sunderland, who finished seventh in the 2025-26 campaign following their own promotion.
Record signings combine for the opener
The home side opened the scoring in the 24th minute through a sequence created by two high-profile summer recruits. Sunderland defender Luke O'Nien conceded possession under no pressure on the halfway line, passing the ball directly to attacking midfielder Julio Enciso. Enciso, who previously played for Brighton and had a loan spell at Ipswich before completing a £26 million permanent transfer, skipped past O'Nien and shimmied beyond Dan Ballard. Enciso then rolled a pass across the penalty area, bypassing goalkeeper Robin Roefs, allowing Emersonn to tuck the finish away. Emersonn arrived from French club Toulouse for £24 million plus add-ons, having previously recorded six goals in 28 matches in France, two goals in 17 games at Turkish side Goztepe, and 13 appearances at Athletico Paranaense before suffering a serious knee injury. The 22-year-old became the first Brazilian to appear for Ipswich in a competitive match.

Sunderland response and second-half pressure
Sunderland found a response before the interval when Nilson Angulo produced a 39th-minute free kick to level the score at 1-1. Despite the equaliser, the visitors failed to control the contest in the second half, with 33-year-old captain Granit Xhaka completing the full 90 minutes in midfield. Sunderland generated only three shots across the entire second period as the home defence contained their attacks. Ipswich threatened again when Emersonn beat defenders Thomas Meunier and Enzo Le Fée along the left flank before finding Enciso with a low cross, though the Paraguayan midfielder sent his first-time strike over the crossbar.

Clarke settles the match in the 90th minute
The decisive moment arrived on the stroke of full time through substitute Jack Clarke, who faced his former club. Clarke capitalised on a wayward pass from Sunderland defender Omar Alderete, raced clear through midfield, and reached the edge of the penalty box. In the 90th minute, the winger curled a low shot from just inside the area into the far bottom corner past Roefs. The goal secured an opening-day victory for the newly promoted team and prevented a repeat of the late vulnerabilities that troubled the club during their previous top-flight campaign.
