Inter Miami names Cristian 'Kily' González head coach to replace Guillermo Hoyos

Inter Miami announced on Thursday that Cristian 'Kily' González will take over as first-team head coach, replacing Guillermo Hoyos once administrative work permits are approved. Hoyos will provisionally oversee the squad until González and his technical staff arrive. The 52-year-old González becomes the fourth permanent head coach and the fourth consecutive Argentine to take charge of the South Florida club in three years, following Gerardo Martino, Javier Mascherano, and Hoyos.

Hoyos tenure and the summer downturn

Hoyos originally joined the organization as Director of Development in August 2023 before advancing to Sporting Director in January 2025. He assumed interim head coaching responsibilities in April 2026 after Mascherano stepped down for personal reasons following Miami's league title in December. Hoyos directed 17 competitive matches, securing 9 victories, but the team entered a slump following an initial stretch where they won six of their first eight games. Miami went winless in their last five matches across all competitions, recording four defeats and one draw, and suffered a group-stage elimination in the Leagues Cup.

The team recorded only one win in their last seven competitive outings, with their most recent MLS victory occurring on July 25 in a 1-0 win against CF Montréal. Miami sits second in the MLS Eastern Conference with 39 points, trailing first-place Nashville SC by 10 points with 13 regular-season matches remaining. Prior to the coaching announcement on Thursday, Major League Soccer issued Hoyos a one-match suspension and an undisclosed fine for repeated infractions of the league's late kickoff policy. Hoyos will serve the ban during Miami's home fixture against CF Montréal on Saturday, August 29.

González coaching profile and playing career

González takes on his first managerial appointment outside Argentina after ten months without a club following his departure from Club Atlético Platense in October 2025. His managerial career includes spells at Rosario Central between 2020 and 2022, Unión de Santa Fe from 2023 until January 2025, and Platense from June to October 2025.

As a player, the Rosario native represented Rosario Central, Boca Juniors, Real Zaragoza, Valencia, Inter Milan, and San Lorenzo across an 18-year career. He won the 1999 Spanish Super Cup and the 2002 La Liga championship with Valencia, reached consecutive UEFA Champions League finals, and earned selection to the UEFA Team of the Year in 2001. González also won the 2005–2006 Serie A title with Inter Milan and collected an Olympic gold medal at Athens 2004, scoring 10 goals in 56 appearances for Argentina.

Squad dynamics and connection to Messi

González shared the pitch with Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi in two World Cup qualifiers for Argentina in October 2005, which marked González's final international appearances. The 39-year-old Messi, whose contract runs until 2028, has registered 94 goals and 54 assists in 110 appearances for Inter Miami since July 2023.

The leadership transition arrives following personal difficulty for Messi, who recently experienced the death of his father.
