Insta360 X6 launches at $699.99 with 8K/50fps, Dolby Vision, and AI editing in a smaller body

A smaller body, bigger sensors

Insta360 launched the X6 on August 12, 2026, as its tenth-anniversary flagship 360 camera. The new model is a full inch shorter and 4 grams lighter than the X5, with a slightly wider and thicker body that makes it more pocketable. The rear display shrinks from 2.5 inches on the X5 to 2.32 inches but upgrades from LCD to OLED. Hardware record and power buttons remain on the side for gloved or wet fingers, with an additional quick-switch button on the back for toggling between 360 video, photo, and single-camera modes.

The core upgrade is a pair of custom 1/1.1-inch square sensors co-developed with Sony, up from the 1/1.28-inch sensors in the X5. Insta360 claims 33 percent more sensor area and four times the light intake per frame. The X6 captures 360 video at up to 8K/50fps, compared with the X5's 8K/30fps ceiling, and 360 photos at 120 megapixels, up from 72 megapixels. Single-lens recording maxes out at 5K/60fps, or 4K/120fps. A "Bullet Time" mode reaches 6K/120fps or 4K/240fps for slow-motion footage.

Price and positioning

The X6 starts at $699.99, $150 more than the X5's $549.99 launch price. An Essentials Bundle at $799.99 adds a second battery, an invisible selfie stick, a fast charging case, and other accessories. UK pricing is £619 for the standard bundle and £709 for the Essentials Bundle; Australian pricing is AU$1,049.99 and AU$1,159.99 respectively. The camera is available in black or white through Insta360's online store and other retailers.

The launch places the X6 in a more competitive field than the X5 faced. TechRadar notes the X5 held the top spot in its best 360 camera guide for over a year, fending off the DJI Osmo 360 and GoPro Max 2. The X6 enters as what TechRadar calls the most expensive small 360 camera currently available.

Durability, battery, and pro features

The X6 is waterproof to 20 meters without a case and 60 meters with one, outperforming both the Osmo 360 and Max 2 in that metric. Its replaceable lenses are now five times more scratch-resistant and 60 percent cheaper to replace than the X5's. Insta360 claims 140 minutes of continuous recording at 8K/30fps from the 2,600mAh battery, a figure TechRadar's testing corroborated with zero overheating during continuous filming.

The X6 is the first 360-degree camera with in-camera Dolby Vision support, capturing brightness and contrast metadata frame by frame. Dolby Vision mode limits recording to 8K/30fps. Ten-bit color depth is available across every shooting mode, including PureVideo low-light mode, which the X5 did not support. The camera includes 47GB of onboard expandable storage and offers 14.5 stops of dynamic range with a 2.44um pixel size at 8K.

AI editing and software

A "Triple AI chip system" powers auto-editing features, built around a Qualcomm 8-core processor and two dedicated imaging chips. "AI Director" produces a full edit overnight, delivering a notification the morning after recording. "Auto Edit 2.0" lets users select which clips to include before the camera generates an edit. TechRadar reported that the mobile app crashed repeatedly during editing and export in pre-release testing, while the desktop app lacked the AI auto-editing tools. Insta360 also introduced "InstaFrame 2.0" with face tracking for vlogging, and the X6 works directly with the Mic Pro microphone without a receiver and a head-tracker accessory at launch.
