Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0 in Premier League opener as Ajayi and Mendy score
Promoted Hull City scored twice from first-half set pieces to secure their first top-flight victory since 2017, while Arsenal, Leeds, and Ipswich also collected opening-weekend wins.
Hull City capitalize on first-half set pieces
Newly promoted Hull City defeated Manchester United 2-0 at home on Saturday in the opening round of the Premier League season. The home side took the lead in the 17th minute following an attacking corner kick. Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens initially produced a save from close range, but Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi converted the loose rebound across the goal line to open the scoring. Striker Oli McBurnie joined Ajayi in celebration as the hosts established early control. Hull doubled their advantage in the 38th minute when defender Nobel Mendy rose to head a free-kick cross into the net. The two first-half goals punished defensive vulnerabilities on set pieces for Manchester United, who finished third in the Premier League during the previous campaign.

Manchester United held scoreless despite second-half possession
Manchester United controlled play after the half-time break, monopolizing possession and registering over 70% of total match possession. Despite controlling the tempo throughout the second half, the visitors generated few genuine scoring opportunities against Hull's defensive structure. Their most promising moment arrived in the 79th minute when forward Bryan Mbeumo found space in a dangerous position inside the penalty area. Hull City goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis denied Mbeumo's attempt to keep the visitors scoreless and preserve his clean sheet through the final whistle. The victory was Hull City's first triumph in the English top flight since 2017 and their first Premier League win against Manchester United in club history.
