Greece braces for 36°C heat and gale-force Aegean winds on Sunday
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service forecasts sunshine, temperatures up to 36°C in the west, and northerly winds reaching 8 Beaufort over the Aegean Sea on June 28.
Sunny and hot with powerful winds
Greece faces a classic summer Sunday on 28 June, with generally clear skies, high temperatures, and strong northerly winds. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) reports that while most of the country will see sunshine, the combination of heat and wind creates a volatile mix, particularly over the Aegean.
Temporary clouds will develop during the midday and afternoon hours in the northwestern mainland and Crete, with isolated showers possible in the mountains of western Macedonia and Epirus.
Wind intensity peaks at 8 Beaufort
Winds will blow from the north-northeast, at 4 to 6 Beaufort over the mainland, strengthening to 7 and locally 8 Beaufort in the Aegean. In the eastern Attica region, winds will reach 5 to 7 Beaufort, briefly touching 8 in some eastern spots. The strong winds are expected to affect maritime traffic and coastal activities throughout the day.
Temperature spread across the country
Highs will climb to 36°C locally in the western mainland, while the Ionian Islands, Dodecanese, eastern Aegean islands, and eastern mainland will see 33 to 35°C. Most other island areas will stay milder, at 29 to 30°C, though southern Crete will reach 33°C. The following chart shows the expected maximums for key regions.

What to expect in Attica and Thessaloniki
In the capital, a generally clear sky will prevail. Winds from the north-northeast will blow at 5 to 7 Beaufort, with brief gusts to 8 in the east. Temperatures will range from 24 to 33°C, slightly cooler in the eastern suburbs.
In Thessaloniki, skies will be mostly sunny, with temporary clouds in the afternoon and a chance of local showers in the surrounding mountains. Winds will be variable at 3 to 4 Beaufort, turning easterly 3 to 5 early in the morning. The temperature will reach 22 to 32°C.
Maritime and outdoor impact
With winds reaching gale force in the Aegean, ferry services and small craft may face disruptions. Coastal areas in the Cyclades and eastern islands will experience rough seas. The hot inland conditions, combined with dry northerly winds, also elevate fire risk in forested areas.
