Hamburg U1 subway section closes for three months from July 13 as 110-year-old bridge replaced
Replacement buses will serve the affected segment while the Hamburger Hochbahn renews Ohlsdorf station and installs a new bridge over Alsterdorfer Straße. The 23 million euro project also allows U5 construction work at Sengelmannstraße.
Closure details
On Monday, July 13, Hamburg's U-Bahn line 1 will be shut between Fuhlsbüttel-Nord and Lattenkamp. The Hamburger Hochbahn announced that the closure is necessary for urgent construction work at Ohlsdorf station and the replacement of the bridge over Alsterdorfer Straße. The section is scheduled to reopen on October 14, after three months of disruption.
Replacement service
Two types of replacement buses will run during the works. Direct buses will travel non-stop between Langenhorn Markt and Lattenkamp, while additional replacement buses will serve every U-Bahn stop between Fuhlsbüttel-Nord and Lattenkamp. The Hochbahn advises passengers to use the HVV journey planner on its website or mobile apps. Push notifications through the app will deliver real-time updates.
- Closure begins; replacement buses start operating
- New bridge installed over Alsterdorfer Straße
- Planned reopening of the section
Aging infrastructure
Part of the platform at Ohlsdorf station is 100 years old, and the adjacent bridge over Alsterdorfer Straße dates back 110 years. Both structures require renewal. In August, a new bridge will be installed. The closure also covers modernisation of further structures, signalling technology, and tracks along the route.
Investment and wider project work
The Hamburger Hochbahn is investing a total of 23 million euros in the renewal. The U5 project team will take advantage of the shutdown to carry out construction at Sengelmannstraße station that is impossible while U1 trains are operating.
