Greece opens childcare voucher scheme for 2026-2027 with higher income limits and no threshold for large families

Greece’s annual childcare voucher scheme for the 2026-2027 period is now open, covering nurseries (βρεφικοί, παιδικοί and βρεφονηπιακοί σταθμοί), creative activity centres for children (ΚΔΑΠ) and equivalent centres for children with disabilities (ΚΔΑΠ ΑμεΑ). The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family has allocated 393 million euros to the initiative. The ministry described the widened eligibility criteria as the broadest ever offered in the programme’s history. The vouchers (κουπόνια) are intended to help families manage childcare costs and support work-life balance. The ministry released detailed guidance through four questions and answers.

Income thresholds raised

Families with up to two children now qualify with a combined family income of up to 35,000 euros per year. Households with three children can earn as much as 38,000 euros. Both figures refer to total gross family income as declared on the latest tax return. The limits were already increased in the 2025-2026 cycle, but this year they reach further into middle-income brackets. The ministry expects a larger pool of beneficiaries as a direct consequence. The earlier round already served over 170,000 children. The ministry noted that the criteria are the most inclusive to date.

Large families exempt entirely

For the first time, families with three or more children (πολύτεκνες) face no income requirement whatsoever. Previously, such families were subject to a higher ceiling but still had to prove their earnings. Now they can apply and receive vouchers regardless of annual income. The ministry clarified the change in its Q&A, calling it an important step. It means the largest households no longer need to submit income documentation at all.

Already from last year we had increased their income criteria. From this year, however, for the first time, every income criterion is completely removed. If you belong to a large family, regardless of income, you can submit your application and receive state support.

Application process and deadline

Applications are accepted exclusively through the digital platform aitisi26.eetaa.gr, with the “26” in the domain indicating the 2026 cycle. The application window opened on 31 July and closes on 5 August 2026. Most required personal and tax data are retrieved automatically from the Taxisnet database, so applicants need only their personal Taxisnet login codes to confirm their details. The system pre-fills the application with data from the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), eliminating the need for paper documents. The ministry described the automated process as a way to speed up processing and reduce errors. Eligible to apply are parents, guardians, foster parents, legal representatives and commissioners for infants, preschool children, school-age children, adolescents and persons with disabilities. The wide range of eligible guardians ensures children in all care arrangements can benefit.

The platform aitisi26.eetaa.gr is open until 5 August and accepts applications. Most data are retrieved automatically. The only thing you need is your Taxisnet codes.

Beneficiary numbers and outlook

Last year, over 170,000 children received support through the vouchers, a figure the ministry expects to rise sharply given the relaxed criteria. The 393-million-euro budget will be disbursed as vouchers that families exchange at participating nurseries, daycare centres and creative activity providers. The government frames the expansion as a direct way to reduce household expenses while widening access to early education and structured care. The programme also covers centres for children with disabilities (ΚΔΑΠ ΑμεΑ), ensuring inclusion. The ministry stressed that supporting families in their daily lives remains a core priority.
