
Greece defeats Poland 89-81 in basketball friendly behind 22 points from Toliopoulos
Greece defeated Poland 89-81 in a friendly basketball game at the T-Center on Saturday, opening preparations for the upcoming MundoBasket 2027 qualifiers.
Greece secured an 89-81 victory over Poland in a friendly match at the T-Center ahead of the upcoming MundoBasket 2027 qualifiers. Vassilis Toliopoulos led the Greek team in scoring with 22 points, while point guard Nick Calathes marked his return to the national team after a two-year absence by recording 12 assists. Head coach Vassilis Spanoulis tested multiple tactical setups throughout the game while managing a roster missing injured players Kostas Papanikolaou and Dimitris Flionis, as well as Antonis Karagiannidis.
Poland led 21-16 late in the first quarter before Greece executed a 12-1 scoring run early in the second quarter to take a 28-22 advantage. Despite shooting 26.7% from three-point range (4-for-15) in the first half, Greece entered halftime leading 41-39. In the second half, perimeter scoring from Toliopoulos and two-way contributions from Panagiotis Kalaitzakis extended Greece's advantage to double digits at 55-45 and 68-57. Greece will play a final friendly against Cyprus on Monday, August 24, before travelling to Riga to face Ukraine on August 28 and returning to the T-Center to play Spain on August 31.
