The past 12 hours produced a familiar modern mix: war-risk premiums, constitutional rough work and judges trying to slow corporate ambition. The common thread is constraint, either missing, newly imposed or being tested in public.

Górnik Zabrze loses 1-0 to Fenerbahce in Champions League qualifier, Talisca free kick decides first leg

Anderson Talisca's 37th-minute free kick gave Fenerbahce a 1-0 win over Górnik Zabrze in the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round. The return leg is on 29 July in Zabrze, with the Polish side still in contention.

Match summary

Fenerbahce edged Górnik Zabrze 1-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul. Anderson Talisca scored the only goal in the 37th minute, curling a free kick that bounced in front of goalkeeper Philipp Schulze and into the net. It was Fenerbahce's first official goal of the 2026/2027 season. The Turkish side dominated possession but struggled to convert chances, hitting the crossbar twice. Górnik's best opportunity came in the 16th minute when Erik Janża forced a save from Mert Gunok.

Key moments

The home side applied pressure from the start. Talisca's header was tipped onto the bar by Schulze, and later Bartug Elmaz also struck the woodwork. The breakthrough came from a set piece: Talisca's free kick from outside the box deceived Schulze, giving Fenerbahce a lead they held until the final whistle. Late substitute Mason Greenwood, making his debut after a high-profile summer move, headed over the bar in the closing minutes. The 48,000-capacity stadium was jammed two hours before kickoff, with home fans whistling at the Polish players.

Debutants and absentees

Górnik fielded new signing Maximilian Dietz in midfield after buying him from SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Goalkeeper Tomasz Loska was suspended for three European matches, a ban carried over from his time at Śląsk Wrocław, so 23-year-old Philipp Schulze started. Fenerbahce handed a debut to Dutch defender Nathan Ake, who was substituted at half-time, while Greenwood entered in the 83rd minute. The Turkish club spent over €80 million on transfers this summer, with nearly half of that on Greenwood from Olympique Marseille.

## Reactions Turkish fans expressed disappointment with the narrow margin. "It won't work, coach, it won't work. With this football it won't work," wrote supporter Esad Eruyar on X. Polish pundits saw the result as encouraging. "0-1, a decent result that leaves chances for the return leg," noted journalist Michał Pol. Żelisław Żyżyński added, "Górnik lost, but this match is a great lesson for every player and a result that does not deprive Gasparik's team of hope." Kuba Seweryn criticised Fenerbahce's disjointed play: "These Fenerbahce defenders and Fred are kicking the ball as if they have no idea what to play." Oskar Mochnik compared the performance to the Jose Mourinho era, calling it "tedious."

What's next

The second leg will be played on 29 July 2026 at Górnik's stadium in Zabrze. The Polish side trails by a single goal and will have home support, with several hundred fans having travelled to Istanbul on three charter planes. Fenerbahce coach Ismail Kartal acknowledged the tie is not over, while Górnik's Michal Gasparik stressed before the first leg that his team did not come only to defend.
