13-year-old girl found dead in Groß Kummerfeld lake after friend located with alcohol poisoning

Initial call

On Saturday evening, emergency services in Groß Kummerfeld, a municipality in the Segeberg district of Schleswig-Holstein, were alerted to a 14-year-old girl suffering from alcohol poisoning near a bathing lake. The call came in at around 8 p.m., according to the regional control center. Responders treated the teenager at the scene, but during the deployment they realized that a 13-year-old girl who had been with her was now missing.

Search and recovery

A large-scale operation was launched, with more than 100 emergency workers from police, fire brigade, and the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) combing the lake and its surroundings. The search lasted several hours. Eventually, divers located the 13-year-old’s body in the water. Resuscitation attempts were made immediately after the girl was brought ashore, but they were unsuccessful. The body was pronounced dead at the scene.

Criminal police have taken over the case to determine the exact circumstances of the death. A spokesperson for the police stated that investigators are examining whether the deceased had also consumed alcohol before entering the water.
