Magdalena Fręch, lucky loser, wins Wuhan opener and faces Iga Świątek

Magdalena Fręch reached the main draw of the WTA tournament in Wuhan as a lucky loser. She lost the last round of qualifying on Sunday, 11 October, but got into the main draw after Ukrainian Ołeksandra Olijnykowa withdrew with an injury.

In the first round, Fręch beat Mananchaya Sawangkaew of Thailand 6:3, 7:6 (7-5). That result sets up a meeting with seventh seed Iga Świątek, who received a first-round bye as the higher-ranked Polish player. Świątek leads their head-to-head 1-0, having won the only previous meeting 6:1, 6:2 in Warsaw in 2022.
