France pledges interceptor missiles to Ukraine following deadly strike on Kryvyi Rih
French President Emmanuel Macron announced the delivery of air defence interceptor missiles following a Russian strike on a shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih that killed 16 people.
Interceptor missile pledge
French President Emmanuel Macron pledged new interceptor missiles to Ukraine on 22 August 2026, marking day 1,641 of the war. The announcement followed a telephone discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Macron stated that Paris would intensify military backing to help protect Ukrainian airspace from continuous missile and drone bombardments. The commitment expands upon bilateral defense agreements, including a declaration of intent signed on 17 November 2025. Macron condemned Moscow's military strategy while explaining the rationale behind the weapons delivery.
By systematically targeting civilians, and by choosing intimidation and escalation, Russia is probably seeking to project strength but above all shows an admission of weakness. It is crucial, in this context, to give Ukraine all necessary means to defend its skies and defeat this aggression.
Kryvyi Rih shopping centre attack
The French decision arrived one day after Russian forces conducted a double drone strike against a commercial shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Zelensky located in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Emergency services and regional officials reported that the strike killed at least 16 people, injured 130 others, and left nine individuals missing. The tactic involved a second strike hitting the location after first responders arrived at the scene. Edem Wosornu, operations director at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, noted that such double strikes are prohibited under international humanitarian law. Russian aerial operations have expanded to target logistics warehouses and civilian hubs across the country, with daytime air raid sirens sounding in Kyiv on 22 August.

Air defence shortfalls and European initiatives
Ukrainian forces face sustained inventory deficits as Russian forces fire daily salvos of ballistic and cruise weapons. Ukrainian military data recorded over 450 Russian missiles fired in July 2026 alone, including nearly 200 ballistic units. President Zelensky requested the United States the previous week to sell 5% of its interceptor stockpiles, noting that such an allocation would help Ukraine survive winter and protect civilian lives. To reduce reliance on American Patriot systems, which US President Donald Trump has been reluctant to supply, European allies formed a dedicated air defence coalition in Paris on 13 July 2026. Nine European countries committed to developing defensive anti-ballistic equipment through Project Freya.
It is essential that all countries that have resources in their possession also join this effort.
Upcoming diplomatic summit and civilian demonstrations
Diplomatic coordination among European partners will accelerate with a meeting of the coalition of volunteers scheduled for midday on Monday, 24 August 2026. The session will be co-chaired by Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. European Council President António Costa and approximately ten other delegates will travel to Kyiv to meet with Zelensky. Concurrently, public appeals regarding the human cost of the war took place in Istanbul, where 200 relatives of missing Ukrainian soldiers gathered in the Beyoglu district ahead of Ukraine's Independence Day on 24 August to demand information about husbands and family members held in Russian captivity or lost on the front lines.
