Four dead in two separate road crashes on the same stretch of highway in Italy's Frosinone province
A collision between a truck and a van killed three construction workers on the Sora-Avezzano highway on Monday afternoon. Hours later, a second crash on the nearby Morolense road left a 50-year-old dead.
The Sora-Avezzano collision
Three construction workers died on Monday afternoon when their Fiat 250 van was struck by a Renault Truck 480 articulated lorry on the Sora-Avezzano highway near the Sora Nord exit, in the Frosinone area. The lorry, operated by Di Nino Trasporti of Pratola Peligna (L'Aquila), hit the driver's side door of the van, which was travelling in the same direction. Two occupants died at the scene: a 29-year-old Nigerian national who was driving and a 66-year-old worker in the passenger seat. A third worker was transported to Santissima Trinità hospital in Sora but died shortly after arrival; his identity had not yet been confirmed as of Monday evening.
The van belonged to the construction firm Edil Pe. Costruzioni of Frosinone. The three victims were returning from a job site at the end of the working day. The 57-year-old lorry driver, a resident of Raiano (L'Aquila), was physically unharmed. Carabinieri from the Sora company are investigating the exact dynamics. The SS690 was temporarily closed at km 40 toward the Abruzzo border, with mandatory exit at Sora Nord (km 42).
The articulated lorry hit the driver's door of the van squarely; according to the position of the vehicles, it was travelling in the same direction.
The Morolense crash
A second fatal accident occurred on Tuesday morning along the Via Morolense, an 18-kilometre provincial road connecting the Sacco river valley to the municipality of Morolo via Supino and Patrica. A light-blue Fiat 500 and a large articulated truck carrying waste materials collided on the straight stretch alongside the railway station. The car's driver, a 50-year-old man from Veroli, was killed. His identity was still being confirmed by authorities on Tuesday morning. Carabinieri, emergency medical personnel, and provincial road crews were on site.
Victims and responders
In the Sora-Avezzano crash, ANSA identified the construction company owner as Dario Persichetti, 65, of Monte San Giovanni Campano, and two employees: a 29-year-old Nigerian driver and a 39-year-old Gambian. Il Fatto Quotidiano and Fanpage reported the driver as a 29-year-old Nigerian and the front passenger as a 66-year-old worker, with the third victim still unidentified. Firefighters, Anas road crews, and three Carabinieri patrols responded to the highway incident. Traffic was diverted and later reopened after on-site investigations concluded.
Road safety context
The two incidents occurred within roughly 12 hours on roads serving the same industrial corridor in southern Lazio. The Sora-Avezzano highway is a key link between Lazio and Abruzzo, frequently used by commercial and construction vehicles. The Via Morolense serves several small municipalities and connects to the same regional road network. No official statement on contributing factors has been released for either crash.
