Police investigate suspicious Folkestone hotel fire after 280 evacuated

Emergency response at the harbour

Emergency services responded to the Grand Burstin Hotel on Marine Parade in Folkestone in the early hours of Saturday, 19 September 2026. Kent Fire and Rescue Service received the first call at approximately 01:06 BST after flames were spotted on the property. At the height of the response, 26 fire engines were deployed to the harbour location to battle the blaze. Fire crews quickly identified the basement of the hotel as the source of the fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked through the night to bring the flames under control. By 08:30 BST, the deployment was scaled back to 10 fire engines, which remained on the scene throughout Saturday afternoon to dampen down remaining hotspots.

Evacuation and council support

The fire forced an immediate evacuation of the seafront property while smoke billowed across the harbour area. Between 200 and 280 guests and staff were cleared from the building during the overnight operation. No injuries relating to the fire were reported by emergency medical personnel or local authorities. Folkestone and Hythe District Council established an emergency welfare centre at the Three Hills Sports Park to accommodate displaced guests and provide essential support. The local council also issued advisories to nearby residents, instructing them to keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke inhalation and to avoid travelling near the harbour so emergency vehicle access remained clear.

Arson investigation underway

Kent Police officers arrived at the scene around 01:20 BST to direct traffic and secure the perimeter around Marine Parade. Following initial assessments with fire investigators, detectives announced that the incident is being treated as suspicious. Authorities suspect that the fire in the basement may have been started deliberately. Detectives have launched an appeal for information, asking local witnesses and drivers with dashcam footage recorded near the seafront overnight to come forward. Police and fire investigation teams continued joint forensic enquiries at the hotel on Saturday afternoon.

Enquiries into the circumstances are underway and officers now believe the fire may have been caused deliberately.

The Grand Burstin Hotel is operated by Britannia Hotels Group, which confirmed cooperation with authorities and the emergency response. The hotel management stated that immediate measures were enacted to verify the safety and wellbeing of all registered guests and staff members present during the overnight fire. Firefighters maintained a dampening operation around the basement through Saturday evening while safety inspectors evaluated structural damage to the seafront venue. Police enquiries into the origin of the fire continue across Folkestone.
