Volunteer firefighter dies after collapsing following routine fitness test in Schleswig-Holstein
A 54-year-old volunteer firefighter collapsed and died after a physical endurance exercise at the district fire department centre in Schleswig.
Exercise at the district centre
A 54-year-old member of the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Grundhof-Brönstrup took part in a routine Belastungsübung on Thursday, 11 June 2026, at the Kreisfeuerwehrzentrale in Schleswig. The exercise required participants to complete sport-like tasks while wearing full protective gear and breathing apparatus. The firefighter joined the drill alongside other members of the volunteer unit.
Collapse after the meal
When the exercise concluded, the group of firefighters drove to a fast-food restaurant. There the 54-year-old suddenly collapsed. Emergency services were alerted, and he was transported to a hospital.
Death confirmed
He died at the hospital. The Kreisfeuerwehrverband Schleswig-Flensburg expressed shock and offered condolences to the family. A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed the sequence of events but provided no further details on the cause of death.
Parallel fatality in Hannover
Only one week earlier, on Thursday, 4 June 2026, a professional firefighter died after taking part in the FireFit European Championships in Hannover. That competition involves an obstacle course with tasks such as carrying a hose pack up a tower, hoisting a weight, using a sledgehammer, and dragging a life-size dummy, all under heavy breathing apparatus. The man collapsed during the competition and was taken to hospital, where he died. Event organisers declined to release further information out of respect for the family.
