Fire near tracks halts Athens suburban trains; service restored after nearly four hours
A fire near the tracks forced the suspension of all services between Ano Liosia and Aspropyrgos on the Athens Suburban Railway on Saturday, stranding two trains. Power was restored at 15:52 and traffic gradually resumed.
What happened
A fire broke out near the railway line between Ano Liosia and Aspropyrgos on the Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) on Saturday, July 4. At 12:10, acting on orders from the Fire Service, Hellenic Train and infrastructure manager OSE suspended all rail traffic on the section. Power was also cut on the Ano Liosia–Loutropyrgos segment as a safety precaution for firefighting crews.
Impact on services
Two passenger trains were stranded at stations: train 1312 (Piraeus–Kiato) remained at Ano Liosia station, while train 1313 (Kiato–Piraeus) was held at Nea Peramos station. Hellenic Train warned of delays and possible schedule changes across the suburban network. The operator said it was in continuous coordination with OSE and the relevant authorities to restore traffic.
Restoration
Power and rail traffic were restored at 15:52, according to a Hellenic Train announcement following an update from OSE. The operator said a gradual normalization of services and timetables was expected.
